Polkinghorne Quantum Physics and Theology Polkinghorne

P is a dyed in the wool Xian and thinks Xian theology is on a par with physics in the realm of 'truth seeking' whereas the position here is that Xianity, like most other religions is an arbitrary political platform designed to justify the actions, civil and military, of the ruling class.

Polkinghorne page 8: 'The widespread success of science is too significant an issue to be treated as if it were a happy accident, that we are free to enjoy without enquiring deeply into why this is the case. Critical realist achievements of this kind cannot be a mater of logical generality, something one would expect to be attainable in all possible worlds. Rather they are an experientially confirmed aspect of the particularity of this world in which we live and of the kinds of being we are. Achieving scientific success is a specific ability possessed by humankind, expressed in the kind of Universe we inhabit. [Polkinghorne's Universe is not universal!] I believe that a full understanding of this remarkable human capacity for scientific discovery ultimately requires the insight that our power in this respect is a gift of the Universe's Creator who, in that ancient and powerful phrase, has made humanity in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Through the exercise of this gift, those working in fundamental physics are able to discern a world of deep and beautiful order -- a Universe shot through with signs of mind. I believe that this is indeed the Mind of that world's Creator that is perceived in this way.

[page 197]

Science is possible because the Universe is a divine creation.'

Polkinghorne page 15: 'The God of truth will not be a deceiver, and insights into divine character, manifested either in the works of creation or in the events of revelation, can be relied upon not to mislead.'

Naive foolishness; deceit is an essential component in evolutionary survival at all scales from bacteria to nations.

page 19: 'the [physical world] is at our disposal to interrogate and put to the experimental test, but the encounter with god takes place on different terms, involving awe and worship and obedience. There is an important qualifying theological insight, called apophatic theology, stressing the otherness of God and the necessary human limitation in being able to speak adequately of the mystery of the divine nature. There are bounds to the possibilities of theological explanation.'

We see this as an obfuscatory political position and see the only ultimate limits on the explanatory power our ability to deal with the sheer complexity of the divine system which is nevertheless contained in divine dynamic simplicity.

Polkinghorne page 21: '. . . the Christian God is the crucified God.' Totally unlike the real God.

Waveform: a one symbol alphabet, the contrast between p and not-p, a two state system which describes the bounds on a single 'dynamism', that is quantum of action.

In many cases we enjoy an interrupt, something new and different,

even exciting, but we do not want to go too far into emergency, injury and death, even though we know all exrtreme events have a certain probability.

Calculus and vector algebra: what does their utility tell us about nature? First that at the fundamental level continuous mathematics is accurate, ie the entropy is very low, in fact (we might guess) one bit per dimension. (In Hilbert space half a bit per dimension because we need two dimensions to encode a qubit.

Quantum schizophrenia: continuous vs discrete. A Hilbert space is continuous mathematics on a space with discrete dimensions, ie orthogonal dimensions.

Modernizing Christianity: keep the ideas and change the words (translation) vs keep the words and change the ideas (interpretation).

What waves in wave mechanics. Quantum {mechanics, theory} as fundamental theology.

Polkinghorne page 61: S matrix encodes the transformation that converts in states into out states.

page 69: 'The theory enables us to calculate with impressive accuracy the probabilities of obtsining different answers, buit iut is unable to explain how is comes about that a specific answer is obtained on a specific occasion.

The invisible (because deterministic) Turing machine.

god, islolated quantum system, inertial frame, initial singularity and Turing machine are all invisible, ie incommunicando.

Death is an inevitable part of the Universe as we see from the model that all possible structures cannot be realized simultaneously (in parallel) and so must be arranged sequentially, the death of one releasing resources for the life of the next. While there is a continuous (unresolvable) range of possible.

Jesus portrayed himself as divine and sinless and if he was crucified it was because he was embarrassingly sure of himself and his death was seen by management as necessary to keep tjhe peace. No that it did much good,.

We live in a Minkowski space. How far to Taree? 50 km? 1 hour? The most interesting feature of this space os that a positive time and a positive distance can combine to create a zero or null interval.

the separation of God and the Universe is a source of error, since it allows corporations like the Romamn Catholic Chuerch tio propagate a false notion god and exploit this notion to become inordinately powerful, confining humanity to a limioted region of noetic space.

Turing machine : computer :: tape recorder : random access [memory].

Continuous : discrete :: linear access : random access

Which amounts to a structural (algorithmic) speedup. [every structure is an algorithm to achieve something, eg oil refinery]

The velocity of light is the normalized rate of time.

The symmetries of the transfinite computer network are such that insofar as Jesus was divine, we are all divine, and every other event in the Universe is similarly divine.

We can derive classical continuity from logical continuity, but logical continuity lies outside the range of classical mathematics since logical actions require discrete changes of state that break the continuity, events like the 'collapse of the wave function' = halting a process of computation.

The stable features of the world are based on error free communication (?) An hypothesis.

Polkinghorne page 99: 'Whatever may eventually prove to be the case, the general hope that some form of GUT [Grand Unified Theory] will in the end be discovered is one that is entertained by many physicists, myself included. A belief in the fundamental unity of physics is one that is encouraged by the kind of past experiences that we have reviewed. It is also supported by the metaphysical conviction of the integrity of the cosmic process that is deeply appealing to scientists.

[page 2]

Theologians may well feel that this act of faith by the scientists is a reflection of a trust, doubtless unconsciously entertained, in the consistency f the one God whose will is the origin of the order of the created Universe.'

How do we know this? It is a guess. Perhaps the Universe creates itself?

Implications for Christianity

At first glance the truth of the hypothesis outlined here would appeal to deal a death blow to Christianity, cutting the ground from under their feet. The Catholic Church believes that it has a unique and special link to God, if it continues to insist on this, it may be doomed. The necessary adjustment, however, the answer is simple. We are all, like Jesus, [persons of the Divinity. A;ll that is lost is the unverifiable claim that Jesus was the only God-Man ever.

This position is also reasonably consonant with the Biblical

[page 3] upon which Christianity relies for its authenticity Probably the latest and best thought out is the Gospel of John. Like all these texts, it has been given a canonical interpretation by the Catholic Church which has often vigorously punished deviants from the official line. The business choices of that institution are, however, irrelevant to the interpretation of John's text. What interests us most is to see through the test to the mind of the writer.

We can gain some insight by considering the epistemological principle upon which Einstein founded his mathematical model of the large scale structure of the Universe : general covariance, which says not so much that we (physicists) make mathematical models of the Universe, but the Universe does so too and the general theory of relativity is worked out as the relationship between two 'dual' spaces of covariant and contravariant vectors which are coupled at each point in space through a metric tensor, a mathematical entity with ten (sometimes independent) degrees of freedom [which, given two vectors, yields a number, the interval between the point represented by the vectors].

The mathematics of general relativity, differential geometry, is an extension of Descartes idea of coordinate geometry which enabled the graphic representation of arithmetic and vice versa.

The hypothesis of original sin is self fulfilling in an externally constrained space, since every movement out of the constraint is an error, interpreted by the Christian faith as a sin, and so unnecessary constraint creates sinners of us all. the basic fault was God's, acting as thought policeman to prevent the first people enjoying the intellectual freedom promised

by the tree of knowledge.

So strong is our belief in continuity and in the fundamental nature of spacetime that we tend to obscure the simplicity of quantum mechanics by conceiving it in a space-time of four dimensions instead of in its proper habitat, the one dimension of action.

After a flurry of emails in the first week the university has fallen silent for a week and I worry that they have seen the radicalism (or naivete) of my plant and are reluctant to take me on for fear that I will fail and so decrease the profitability of their operation. I am nevertheless feeling very complacent about my model and gaining confidence as I explore more widely and see good fits wherever I go although it sometimes takes a long time to see the fit. The job at hand at the moment is to see how the dynamics (and attendant statics) of the transfinite computer network fit into the general framework of fixed point theorems.

correspondence 1: quantum theory
correspondence 2: human experience

How do static messages fit into a dynamic Universe: by the halting of the machine?

Fixed point : point of accumulation.

Harriet Beecher Stowe 0140390030 page 208: 'The trader had arrived at stage of Christian and political perfection which has been recommended by some preachers and politicians of the north, lately, in which he has completely overcome every human weakness and predjudice.'

So much of the pain in the world is gratuitously introduced by the Church[es], which completely overlooking the guidance function of pain, have decided that it is a good in its own right as long as it is inflicted for people's 'own good', like corporal punishment.

Stowe page 212: 'But who, sir, makes the trader? Who is most to blame. The enlightened, cultivated, intelligent man who supports the system of which the trader is the inevitable result, or the poor trader himself? You make the public statement that calls for his trade, that debauches as depraves him, till he feels no shame in it, and in what are you better than he?'

The unit of action is one cycle of a 'wave' that is one execution of a Turing machines or network of Turing machines at whatever scale [a 'closure'] In human terms, one lifetime from creation to annihilation. Incomputable processes never end. [do we need complex numbers because every polynomial can be factored in the complex domain?

Only stationary states can be expressed mathematically and since stationary states are created and annihilated, their precision is limited. Where there is entropy there can be information.

In a nutshell, the Universe provides us with a set of distinct, addressed events, out of which we can construct a transfinite computer network which contains human beings among the myriad stable structures within it.

[page 6]

Local determinism modelled by isolated computer.

We understand stationary points in the Universe as a meeting of duals, as the invariant metric joimns covariant and contravariant representations of the same space. Its coming through in waves.

Jauch, Jozef Maria, Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, Addison-Wesley Pub Co 1977 Preface: 'This book is an advanced text on elementary quantum mechanics. By 'elementary' I designate here the subject matter of non-relativistic quantum mechanics for the simplest physical systems. With the word 'advanced' I refer to the use of modern mathematical tools and the careful study of difficult questions concerning the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics. These questions of interpretation have been a source of difficulties from the beginning of the theory in the late twenties to the present day. '

Polkinghorne, John, Quantum Physics and Theology: An Unexpected Kinship, Yale University Press 2008 Amazon Product Description 'Despite the differences of their subject matter, science and theology have a cousinly relationship, John Polkinghorne contends in his latest thought-provoking book.  From his unique perspective as both theoretical physicist and Anglican priest, Polkinghorne considers aspects of quantum physics and theology and demonstrates that the two truth-seeking enterprises are engaged in analogous rational techniques of inquiry. His exploration of the deep connections between science and theology shows with new clarity a common kinship in the search for truth.   The author identifies and explores key similarities in quantum physics and Christology. Among the many parallels he identifies are patterns of historical development in quantum physics and in Christology; wrestling with perplexities such as quantum interpretation and the problem of evil; and the drive for an overarching view in the Grand Unified Theories of physics and in Trinitarian theology. Both theology and science are propelled by a desire to understand the world through experienced reality, and Polkinghorne explains that their viewpoints are by no means mutually exclusive.'

Stowe, Harriet Beecher, Uncle Tom's Cabin: Or Life Among the Lowly, Penguin Classics 1981 Amazon product description: 'Published in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel was a powerful indictment of slavery in America. Describing the many trials and eventual escape to freedom of the long-suffering, good-hearted slave Uncle Tom, it aimed to show how Christian love can overcome any human cruelty. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" has remained controversial to this day, seen as either a vital milestone in the anti-slavery cause or as a patronising stereotype of African-Americans, yet it played a crucial role in the eventual abolition of slavery and remains one of the most important American novels ever written.'
