Symmetry of a communication channel with respeoct to message = freedom of the press. Symmetry of people w.r.t. motion in human space = human freedom.

[page 36]

A symmetry = a degree of freedom.

1. Mathematical theology: Traditional theology is fully deterministic. God sees all, knows all, causes all, and the stochastic appearance of real life is considered to be only relative to ourselves. One could say that this God is mathematically perfect in the Platonic sense. Here we take the view that theology and mathematics share a single criterion of truth, mathematical exitence, consistency. Consistent mathematical structures are granted mathematical existence. God itself is said to be limited only by consistency. The modern mathematical theories of Turing, Gödel and Shannon, however, have shown that formal consistency implies incompleteness, incomputability and bounds on the rate of communication between independent sources. It is not surprising, therefore to find that uncertainty was found at the root of the physical worls when we discovered and developed quantum mechanics. Consistency places bounds on 'causal' determinism. Theory of everything.

2. Quantum mechanics and fixed points, etc.

To write a paragraph like the above which succinctly captures [an idea] seems to 'justify' my day. Many times, in this sense, my day's work is done from about 4 to 7 am when I first lie awake thinking and then get up, light the fire, make the coffee and begin to document my latest insights.

We are asked to believe that the caprices of nature are the work of an omniscient and omnipotent God, part of a divine plan which, despite appearances, is ultimately for our own good.

[page 37]

One might see the fundamental motivation for traditional theoogy is fear of death and uncertainty. This theology justifies those fears with a promise of eternal life and a God who has a plan which takes care of everything.

Even quantum mechanics proposes an underlying determinism in the evolution of the wave function and explains uncertainty by a symmetry with respect to outcomes of the 'collapse of the wave function'.

What we have done is take the indeterminism beyond the wave function right into the root of the Universe by establishing that insofar as it is deterministic it is digital, as required by Shannon's theorems, and insofar as it is digital it can be placed onto correspondence with equally digital mathematical symbols, so it is no wonder that mathematics is both effective in the physical sciences and shows us the limits of determinism. The picture is becoming clearer, the fuzz is beginning to reveal an image as our resolution improves — a lot of apparently random spots are becoming correlated.

I am a prophet in the old theoligcal senseof people who see God and describe their vision to others. On my model we are all local prophets, and the task of theology is to correpate all these spots of vision [as general relativity unites inertial frames].

Shannon: digital = perfect = error free

In the continuum eigenfunctions are no longer discrete and symmetry reigns. The play between certain and uncertain is worked out in mathematics between digital sets of cardinal n and continuous (unresolved) sets of cardinal >n.

[page 38]

Since the creative nature of the Universe means that death is inevitable we must accept it and concentrate instead on the glory of our lives as elements of God.

Every dynamic system has fixed points (?). This is built into the language, insofar as we can call it a system it is fixed.

3. Computer network.

We can make these ideas more concrete by considering quantum mechanics as a process [algorithm] for computing the nature and volume of the traffic on various channels of the Universal network.

Digitization explains both certainty and uncertainty: certainty about the fixed symbols, uncertainty about the spaces between them, the dynamic transitions.

From a formal point of view symmetry is the nothings from which somethings (broken symmetries) are created.

The wave equation in its mathematical form is solved by a superposition of a continuous spectrum of frequency, where we understand 'frequency' to mean simply the inverse of 'time' (τ) in the denominator. The wave equation is a well attested foundation of physics and the mathematical theory that surrounds it seems be a good general description of the way things are. All solutions to the equation are periodic but the art of Fourier transformation tells us that we can represent almost any function with a superposition of periodic functions.

Meaning: an online reservation computer manipulates abstract seats and people, matches them up and bills accordingly. It is a finite system even though physical seats and people might be individually better described by a transfinite system. All that is really required is that both the people and the seats have unique names.

The job of the marketing department is to tailor its seductive arts to the demographic most likely to see value in these ideas. As well as scientists this market includes policy and engineering people who are interested in the practical peaceful management of large bodies of people within the accepted culture of best practice, human rights etc.

The most general treatment of communication networks is thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in general, all of which depend on symmetries like stationarity and ergodicity (what does that mean?). Ergodic hypothesis - Wikipedia

So we take 'theology' out of unreasonable and substitute metaphysics, a nice neautral term.

The heuristic principle: if the world started very simple the description of the initial state must be simple. It needs only symbols corresponding to physical fixed points and rules of inference for moving between them or sets of rules, the Feynman paths out of which are selected the classical path (ie deterministic, periodic, digital with respect to phase.].

The fallback position, if I cannot make money out of writing, is just business as usual, at least for the next five years or so.

The establishment of human symmetry means that we decouple wealth from political power as much as possible [make them orthogonal]. In general the world seems to be moving in the opposite direction [toward greater correlation of wealth and power].

What value is this stuff to the global debate about power, politics, privacy, rights and so on? The strongest point to emerge is that a higher layer (like a government or a molecule) must respect the properties of the lower layer upon which it depends (people, atoms) if it is to survive. If it treats them badly enough, it will fail and, to the contrary, the more effectively it exploits their abilities, the more secure it will become. Nations divided into exploiting and exploited classes tend to be unstable. Acemoglu and Robinson. Acemoglu & Robinson

I am watching the clock tick and the fire burning and wondering about the connection.

From the point of view of classical physics the most surprising feature [of quantum mechanics] is that it describes a discrete or quantized rather than a continuous Universe. This is consistent with observation, and the continuous mathematical techniques we use to compute the nature and probability of these discrete events works very well, except when we have to deal with expressions whose denominator goes to zero and

[page 43]

we are confronted with infinities that do not correspond to the data.

Why id the Universe quantized rather than continuous? An answer appears if we consider quantum mechanics as a set of algorithms for modelling the nature of frequency of traffic on the lines of a universal network.

Shannon derived expressions for the maximum rate of error free information over noiseless and noisy channels [channel capacity]. Claude E Shannon

Errors occur when there is a greater than zero probability of one symbol being mistaken for another. Error free communication requires that there be no probably overlap between symbols, that is that they be orthogonal. Source / source alphabet / eigenfunctions.

Quantum mechanics works because eigenvalues (amplitudes) correspond to eigenfunctions and the amplitudes squared are the probability of observation [so we think amplitude describes one way communication, amplitude squared two way (verified, realized, completed) communication].

EIGENFUNCTION = SYMBOL (definition of)

Tuesday 25 June 2013

Science is trying to write the algorithm by which the Universe itself operates. Pure action of itself has no algorithm and since there are no external constraints on it the only limit on possible algorithms is consistency. The simplest algorithm, from a formal point of view, is no operation, which is equivalent to symmetry. The next simplest is not, which transforms action into energy and gives us time and a clock. Then two input functions which give us a universal computer.

[page 44]

What we see growing before our eyes is a set of logically connected fixed points in the Universal dynamics which we see as broken symmetries, from the totally simple initial state to the current complex and complexifying / simplifying state.

What we need to explain about quantum mechanics is the coupling between eigenfunctions and probabilities via eigenvalues. The eigenfunctions determine the source symbols (alphabet) by bring stationary points under the measurement operator which leaves the phase of a state vector untouched but changes the length which translates as a probability. Difficult. So perhaps we work from my own behaviour interpreted in quantum mechanical terms, the dynamics of my mind emitting symbolic sentences at a certain rate because it is searching for stationary points that can be communicated to my friends and others.

As far as this notebook goes, I cannot really predict what I am going to write next except that it is going to come after this and the fixed points in my mind are periodic function (a la Eccles) and they go round and round in my mind until I get them down, and can then stand on them which I take the net step in some pretty random partly logically connected direction in my mental (network) phase space.

Communication theory works by converting the output of source from a set of letters with varying but normalized probability, and

[page 45]

therefore constrained entropy into sequences of symbols which are equiprobable and therefore have maximum entropy giving us headroom (space) for error correction by putting symbols further apart. Such low entropy probability structure that a source has we take to be a constrain arising from the meaning of the message the source is transmitting, but this is irrelevant to the source and channel as hardware, being generally covariant or gauge symmetrical with respect to this meaning, which is of interest to the users of the channel not to the channel itself.

Fixed point = recursive function = algorithm = periodic structure, returning to its starting point then executing again, like the rotation of the radius vector in the complex plane. The ubiquity of complex numbers is due to the fact that all fixed points are mathematically represented as identical repeated processes in the dynamics which we understand to be distinct instances of the same algorithm, the algorithms growing in complexity as the world evolves.

The tensor product creates a space large enough to contain all possible joint states of the interagents, that is all possible mappings of one to the other, each mapping being constrained only by the requirement that the metric remains fixed, which is somehow connected to the local conservation of action and maybe energy, rate of action.

Every good theory asks more questions than it answers, or, shall we say, may ask and answer one question. So how do we interpret the energy equation (energy / frequency equation) φ dot = Hφ. x, x dot, x dot dot (are there [html] entitites for these?)

[page 45]

Like many a retiree I want to go to heaven and rest in peace (not dead, but having everything done for me). But we have to work to live, where we define work tautologically as the activites necessary to maintain the inputs for our dissipative processes so that life is maintained. In this way all living things must work on their environment, in my case (and analogously in all other cases) building things, like nests, eggs, crops, shelters (eg clothes) etc.

Here is the fundamental moral error of the Church: work and pain are not punishment from God but conditions of life. Pain tells us we are running off the geodesic of life and work corrects the error. So I get hungry and work for food [just pitting it in my mouth qualifies as work!].

The Church is political: life is tough, we know that, but if you listen to use, we can promise you a life of eternal rest in the hereafter ie the return to potentiality, having been once realized.

The times appear to be interesting insofar as there is much unrest about the role of the elite in terms of their control of power, money and ideas at both the theological, religious and political level. The new religion

[page 47]

of rights and civility is growing, although hidden in the sense that these features of modern evidence based culture have yet to be recognised as religion.

The latest order of practical procedure [ie the applied theology side of NT/Development/] is love, culture, religion, politics, design, economics, work and experience (the new guises of heaven and hell).

The self righteousness of the Papacy and the Presidents of many states is bringing them into disrepute through the continuing conflicts that they represent with the general theory that we should have more input into the control of our own lives.

The internet is exposing both the light and dark features of human existence. However, no amount of darkness can extinguish a single light, and any light lightens any darkness that it can penetrate. Our historically perverted ideas of see and gossip are manifested in the pornography and spying that the internet has made possible. The spies and the pornographers may be using approximately the same bandwidth, the spies receiving, the pornographers transmitting from and to the general population.

Rational networkers design the channel to carry the traffic. In the era of the optical fibre, we see no practical limits to the volume of traffic if we can bring the terminals up to the capacity of the lines.

The US projects vast military power but is now to be seen as a political failure because the power is not properly controlled but in the hands of private industry feeding

[page 48]

off the military property that violent power will grow until it destroys its own base, a heartening feature of the Universe — errors self destruct (but they may take a lot of error free structure with them). Better to diagnose and treat whole they are yet small but we're a bit beyond military babyhood now.

How hard should I work? Snowden? Ellsberg? I am trying to expose an error that is in plain sight, but to make headway have to see the error free system, the Universe = God.

Equipping ourselves to survive the hard times leaves [us] with the headroom to enjoy leisure in the easy times. The probability of survival (fitness) is probably maximized with more effort, so that at my stage of life, when the survival plan is still being developed, it is worth forgoing a bit of leisure for future profit. This is the attitude that mandates saving to develop capital. Our most important capital [intellectual] is theology and religion.

Say again: The Roman Catholic Church is built on two fundamental errors [that God is not the Universe, that work and pain are punishment for disobeying God].

The fundamental thermodynamic principle of society: stability is maximized by maximizing entropy which means establishing equiprobability between the symbols in human space, us.

The human layer vs the layers controlling it, which we might just call h ++1.

[page 49]

The cool elite / aristocracy are beginning to feel the heat because the adiabatic wall that they have built around themselves by secrecy, spying, violence and murder is beginning to leak as the rate of human education and communication grows.

Every living (that is embodied) system has got to know how its environment works in order to survive. Our ultimate environment is God, so it is our relationship to Hod which guarantees our survival. The Christian Churches have a very limited vision of God, God seen through a pinhole called the Bible. Here we opt for considering every experience of our lives as a revelation from God. Van you believe it? Why not? Can the real God be as narrow minded as Yahweh, a God that barracked for just one people to the detriment of all others. A real God must be all embracing. Miles

Life, like physics, is a cyclic phenomenon with the interaction between the creation and annihilation of states being controlled by a symmetry like conservation of action, energy or momentum. So we have a business cycle driven by cycles of innovation, the new things (like flat screen TV) driving out the old tubes. By creating a new technology is embodied, by annihilation old technology is recycled, conserving the spacetime symmetries, action, energy, momentum. If it is conserved it does not change with time, or with time and space, so I translate as a whole from A to B.

Can we say that quantum mechanics forms a bridge between energy and entropy, showing that the number of states associated with a fixed energy can be changes, so that each state has a lower energy and may nevertheless count in the measurement of entropy.

Prigogine and dissipation. Prigogine

We need to know our world and one of its most obvious features is that is is cyclic, different features moving at different frequencies like walking and the ring and setting of the sun. Because is is is cyclic it can be described by a superposition of waves of various amplitudes. The basic cycle is the simple harmonic oscillator, conserving energy and oscillating at constant frequency determined by the acceleration of [force acting on] the moving element.

The continuum has no entropy because there is nothing to count.

Thursday 27 June 2013

The isolated quantum system is believed to evolve at constant entropy, so all energy operators are considered to be reversible. Further, given the hypothesis that the information density of a continuum is infinite, we may consider the entropy of such a system to be infinite. `In this context the fixed points arising from the collapse of such a system by observation should also be infinite if we consider that the information carried by a point is equal to the entropy of the space in which it lies. This story would appear to

[page 51]

contradict the gravitational idea that the world begins as a structureless point, where no geodesics go which may be considered to have entropy zero.

Classically we consider the increase in entropy to be a loss of structure. here, we feel, that since the count of entropy is based on observable fixed points, we we the gain in entropy as a gain in structure. How do the physicists answer these objections? Are they strong enough to lead us to question existing theory, or are they considered to ie in the area of mystery between the standard model and gravitation that remains tyo be elucidated by the theory of everything?

The Platonic approach begins by bringing in indisputably hard edged mathematics ith sharp cuts between the various p's and not-p's. Natural theology seems to give a different impression: a pure dynamic god communicating with itself (at a rate limited by Shannon) in order to bring forth fixed points just as I am doing now, sitting in front of my unenlightened fire listening to the rain steadily falling outside. All the data I am using for this writing has been absorbed by reading or misreading a core library of a few hundred books (those referenced most frequently in these notes, probably beginning with Cantor and Lonergan) and I generate new sentences by bringing all these ideas into contact with one another in different permutations to see where that leads. Intelligent design is a mixture of randomization (ie symmetry) and selection, picking out the permutations that work by becoming periodic [in other words, they pick themselves out]. In my case the fixed points have emerged slowly over nearly seventy years, with the database from which they emerge growing as I assimilated more information

[page 52]

about my world. My conclusion from all this is that I can only understand myself and my world if we are both divine, that is dynamic systems whose fixed points are constrained to be logically connected to one another by the underlying dynamics which we can only communicate with and communicate to one another digitally because that is the only way we can communicate without error.

This paper may have been motivated by Turing's observation that the number of different symbols on the tape must be finite or else they would become indistinguishable.

Our certainty that the mathematics of quantum mechanics is deterministic means that we have to introduce the observed uncertainty by fiat.

Symmetry = equiprobability
Broken symmetry = probability structure, spectrum with insights, the cosmic die is loaded.

I am becoming clearer about the uncertainty (obscurity) in the world. It comes down to understanding that the minimum value of ℵ0 is 2 (0, 1 ?)

But as in set theory one becomes two by observing itself, that is by putting itself in a set, a boundary within which it is to be found and without which it is not to be found, ie outside of which. Thermodynamics: blowing on last night;s coals to set the new wood alight.

I am fortunate that the banks wanting their money back helps to overcome my reluctance to monetize my research in some way, probably by the old standby of grants, but first I must catch the ear of a granting body standing a long way outside the high probability zone of application success.

Pure action has no entropy, only the stationary points in the action.

Quantum mechanics is outside space and so cannot of itself define the order of the symbols that are emitted on interrogation of an isolated system. Outside space = no memory.

Traditionally God is all good and the devil is all bad, a crowd of fallen angels to add to the woes of fallen humanity. We are suffering as we should because we disobeyed our king. Now that we have made the Universe divine, however, God is no longer all good but good and bad depending on how you look at it. My misfortune (losing a bet) may add to your wellbeing if you win the bet. So

[page 54]

how do we accomadate badness in god? Let us guess that akk badness arises through local contradiction. Two incompatible systems come together, like a bullet piercisng a heart.

Discipline: error free activity. Either get it right the first time or keep trying until you do. detrministic digital processes can be done perfectly, like arithmetic, but analogue processes, like shooting an arrow, are subject to uncertainty because the shooter has insifficient infomration and processing power to deal with all te perturbations of the arror in fight. Where there is no information there is no control and so uncrtainty. We imagine a completely uncontrolled (random) process to have equiprobable steps. When we see equiprobabiolity broken we suspect the action of a controller biassing events toward a certain 'line' whose width varies from 1 (the whole specrum) (uncertainty) to 0, certainty.

The importance of a task is measured by its frequency, ie lineweight. And being able to lead a good life means modulating our psectrum of activities to achieve the best outcomes from our environment. At the moment I am tryng to modulate myself into producing a theology thst provides us with a new vision of God and the nature of life within God. Christianity concentrates on the evil in the world and seeks to eliminate it, even though it is itself at the root if the evil. The error at the root of Christianity must eventually cause it to self dectruct whe it become obvious enough, The first steo tiward slving any problem s to identfy the problem, which is often overlooked in the status quo, ie vested interests (eg Roman Cathooic Church and Molested Children). So work on this all the timish, slowly chipping away.

Much of the mathematical action takes place at the boundary between the integers and the real numbers. This work is possible because because it is believed possible to represent any real number by at most a countably infinite string of integers, that is an ordered set. Cantor extended this idea that we could use ordered sets of real numbers to represent numbers of an even higher degree of infinity and so on without end. An arithmetical paradise.

Materia prima: nec quid, nec quale, nec quantum nec aliquid eorum quibus ens determinatur [first matter: neither something, nor some sort of thing, nor a quantity, nor any of the other ways by which a being is determined] , ie perfect symmetry, which is also consistent with the idea of pure act. These two concepts are formally the same but have conventionally meanings that are poles apart, the bounds of the spectrum from not being to total being. Nevertheless some insist that material prima is not nothing, as in the world was created out of nothing.

So we begin by assuming the existence of God [including the existence of ourselves] and investigating its properties using logic, mathematics and experience as our guides.

For most of my life I have felt pretty flaky, not having managed to find a place inside academia and promoting a view directly contrary to the vast flow of theological momentum. But as the idea gains strength in my mind, I am beginning to get a feeling of authenticity which I hope will grow until I feel comfortable with taking my idea public and confronting the opposite and well established view.

'O felix culpa': O happy fault. The Catholic notion that the fall and all the evils that followed it were worth it because they brought God down to Earth to die for us and redeem us. A somewhat sado-masochistic thought, but it does encapsulate a property of the Universe, that errors motivate their own correction, like we are prepared [to pay] hundreds to fix a simple leaking pipe in the house. Felix culpa - Wikipedia

The birth of Christianity was another step in the evolution of human understanding of the environment in which we find ourselves. For myself, the fundamental errors built into Catholic dogma are also a happy thought, because they have motivated me to bring my personal God down to earth to the point where I am divine as, I think, is everybody and there is much to be gained if we learn to think of ourselves as personalities of the divine Universe that nurtures us. . . .

[page 58]

Evidence for deprecation of reality: Catholicism treats women as meat, failing to see that we are all spiritually identical. Spiritually identical, peers.

Evidence for the false God: the sheer ludicrousness of their position, that the act of a few early hominids could derange the whole Universe, and that the death of one of them could fix it. All of this encapsulated in a mandatory history that many have died for.

The felix culpa: The Roman Catholic Church worships a false God, itself. A system that does not guide itself by reality is eventually doomed to crash, as the Church has, despite strenuous denial.

Fundamentalism = momentum (resistance to complexification, ie to error in a closed system defined by certain fixed points (dogmas). Mathematics maps the fixed points in the divine dynamics. It is our prerogative to give new meaning to old words by combining them, as we do in the phrase 'The Universe is Divine'.

So a slogan: 'the Universe is divine, and so are we'.Marketing revolves around clarification (which may be deceptive) designed to get the target [to] part with some value in what may be a fair (deceit and force free) trade.

felix culpa —> divine Universe.

Divine = uncontrolled [from outside]

The standard view in the sciences is that the creator (ie the establisher of the initial conditions)

[page 59]

made the Universe in such a way that it has evolved as it has. Studies show that these initial conditions had to be defined quite precisely for things to have worked out. We will use the traditional name God for the creator in what follows, and express this hypothesis in the sentence 'the Universe id divine'.

Jesus: truly God and truly human, but not uniquely divine, although the hero worshipping marketing department of the Roman Catholic Church accepted the political truth that an idea is best marketed in connection with a clearly recognized individual [the face of . . . ].

Now I am beginning to see myself going for broke and exposing my own isights (which I have happily done all along) more aggressively and profitably in the ideas market.

The change is monumental but also very simple, all practically based around fixed point theory.

At the present stage f science fiction: the default model.

The Church denies the spiritual equivalence of women by denying them that step closer to divinity is call priesthood, another indelible mark made on the soul (like baptism) by a human ritual. The big delusion is to give their rituals ontological significance outside the minds of the members.

Theology operates at all levels insofar as they are closed: it defines the boundary between ontological closure (determinism) and openness (ie creation). At the human level human theology is bases on our experiences of one another in all facets of life from love to war.

[page 60]

Universe is divine = self-motivated (not a puppet) and unconstrained except by local consistency. This we take to be a dynamic system mapping onto itself so one is inclined to expect the existence of fixed points. Among the fixed points of the divine Universe we find mathematics, fixed points in the dynamics of the mathematical community (all of us to some extent, if we can count).

Dynamic meditation: sit by the fire and write. Was going to replace the clutch in my car today but it is a bit too wet.

Self reference is only safe for the whole. Parts must look outside themselves as well as within. Theology is a personal statement based on personal experience which can be propagated through symmetries like common experience and common language.

The religion of hate says that they are so different from us that we do not talk to them and we do them harm whenever a profitable opportunity shows itself. This approach leads to war and self destruction in ignorance of the fact that all human populations have almost everything in common but their theological beliefs. There are many constraints on human life that lead to community, but the constraints are weakest on the mental fictions we devise to explain the way we are.

Back to the theological ansatz. Theology and mathematics share the same constrainrt: we grant mathematical existence (and physical possibility) to any consistent structure. An inconsistent system, we say, cannot exist. How then do we explain the inconsistency of a moving bullet and a human brain? It is a matter of levels of complexity. Although

[page 61]

the bullet may survive, the brain very probably dies. Ansatz - Wikipedia

Acemoglu, Daron, and James Robinson, Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty, Crown Business 2012 "Some time ago a little-known Scottish philosopher wrote a book on what makes nations succeed and what makes them fail. The Wealth of Nations is still being read today. With the same perspicacity and with the same broad historical perspective, Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson have retackled this same question for our own times. Two centuries from now our great-great- . . . -great grandchildren will be, similarly, reading Why Nations Fail." —George Akerlof, Nobel laureate in economics, 2001

Cornwell, Patricia, Port Mortuary, Little Brown 2010 From Booklist: 'Cornwell returns to form—somewhat—after the plodding Scarpetta Factor (2009). Told in the first person, the story finds Kay Scarpetta, now the chief medical examiner of the new Cambridge Forensic Center in Massachusetts, involved in a couple of cases: the mysterious sudden death of a man and the murder of a child (whose confessed killer seems to be innocent). Soon she begins to suspect the two cases are related—joined by a piece of high-tech hardware found in the first victim’s apartment—and before too long, she realizes she’s facing what could be her most clever foe yet. For the first time in a while, Cornwell seems genuinely interested in Scarpetta again, giving the novel that spark of life that has made the series so enjoyable for its many fans. The book is still a long way from the glory days of Postmortem (1991) and From Potter’s Field (1995), but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.' David Pitt

Miles, Jack, God : A Biography, Vintage Books 1996 Jacket: 'Jack Miles's remarkable work examines the hero of the Old Testament ... from his first appearance as Creator to his last as Ancient of Days. ... We see God torn by conflicting urges. To his own sorrow, he is by turns destructive and creative, vain and modest, subtle and naive, ruthless and tender, lawful and lawless, powerful yet powerless, omniscient and blind.'

Prigogine, Ilya , From Being to Becoming: Time and Complexity in the Physical Sciences, Freeman 1980 Jacket: 'How has order emerged from chaos? In this book, intended for the general reader with some background in physical chemistry and thermodynamics, Ilya Prigogine shows how systems far from equilibrium evolve elaborate structures: patterns of circulation in the atmosphere, formation and propagation of chemical waves, the aggregation of single-celled animals. In an effort to understand these phenomena, he explores the philosophical implications of the work that won him the 1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.'

Claude E Shannon A Mathematical Theory of Communication 'The fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point. Frequently the messages have meaning; that is they refer to or are correlated according to some system with certain physical or conceptual entities. These semantic aspects of communication are irrelevant to the engineering problem. The significant aspect is that the actual message is one selected from a set of possible messages.' back
