The refugee problem and the complexity/size invariance of economies as a direct consequence of free enterprise. Economies, like networks, are scalable. All you need for an economy is 1. material foundation, and 2. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. The flow of money is driven by solar energy.

Submission to Guardian Australia:

What should we do about refugees?

There is a shockingly obvious answer to the refugee problem. Just let them in. Just act in accordance with the United Nations Refugee Convention which we have signed and ratified.

Why not?

Why are the Australian people and successive Australian governments so terrified of refugees? Why are we going to such inhuman extremes to protect our 'sovereign borders'. Apart from the deeply entrenched conservatism, racism, xenophobia and I'm-alright-Jack-ism of the Australian population, my guess is that the real seat of the fear is that the refugees will hit us in the hip pocket. This is despite the billions that we spend trying to keep them out by broadcasting the tortures they will suffer if they try to get in.

The hip pocket argument against refugees is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of human economy. The entrenched idea if that the way to run an economy is to get something for free and sell it for money. This started when we rode on sheep's backs. The grass grew, courtesy of sun and soil. The sheep ate the grass, grew, reproduced and grew wool. None of this cost very much. Then we had to pay some shearers to get the wool off the sheep and sell it to the mother country. The only fly in this ointment was the shearers, who had to be beaten into submission lest they damage the bottom line.

The sheep business is no longer so prominent. Now the idea is to get a mineral lease for next to nothing, dig up whatever it contains and sell it. In the old days it was necessary to screw the miners as heavily as possible, but these days, because mining is so capital intensive and the miners relatively few, we can afford to pay them a little. The unfortunate difficulty here is that a large proportion of our mining enterprise is foreign owned and the profits from this enterprise seep almost invisibly through our sovereign borders to overseas interests.

This history has obscured the fact that all economy is in fact service industry You scratch my back, I scratch yours. You do my hair, I paint your house. You be a gorgeous baby, I sacrifice everything to feed you and protect you and give you a perfect upbringing. Some of this service is valued in money, the majority of it is not. Unfortunately governments, economists and accountants only see the money and are blind to the reality.

We can model service industry as a network, like the internet. No matter how large the internet gets, every transaction within it involves one server and one client. There is no broadcasting.

And, as any network engineer can explain to you, networks are scale invariant. Whether Facebook has two users or a billion, the network software is essentially the same. The same goes for an economy. Whether we have a population of two or a trillion, the algorithms of service apply: you scratch my back, I scratch yours. More backs, more backscratchers, the actual numbers make no difference.

The government's role in all this is not to keep people out of the economy, or divide it into haves (our mates) and have nots (the rest of you), but to establish the human network protocols that allow us all to be of service to one another.

Let them in. Let us grow in spirit and wealth by accepting the power of networking which has brought the Universe from a collection of hydrogen atoms to the magnificient system we now inhabit.

The fundamental clue to understanding the Universe is that quantum mechanics the theory we use to compute the nature and frequency of traffic on the physical layer of the universal network, is perfectly linear.

peace but not clearly seen. Now it is. Every transition is the same, from p to not-p [the fundamental process of the clock] .

The [local] principal of conservation of energy tells us that the whole Universe moves to one [local] clock, time division multiplexed.

Dear Francis, What I am trying to tell you is that your idea that God is a mysterious entity entirely outside the Universe is wrong. Each of these letters is a statement of that fact, and I will keep writing to you until you reply, because I know that you will only reply when you finally realize the irrefutable truth of what I am trying to tell you.

Your error places a very serious load on the world, as you can see in your denial or sexuality, property and self determination. If you have a moral bone in your body, you will denounce all that is false in your Catholic belief system as aoon as you realize your error.

The Catholic error is an instance of the fundamental error in many ancient belief systems favoured by elites to maintain their power.

Your version of God and the Universe is essentially self contradictory and therefore false. If God is the fullness of being, everything possible, how is it possible to have a separate world, a duplicate in some way of what already exists?

Can't help thinking that the Church's preoccupation with immaculate virgins (whatever that is supposed to mean) is closely connected to the propensity of Church employees to molest children.

For those of us who have intimate experience of the Church, the reality is nothing like the P[ublic] R[elations]. The Church makes out that it is all for human dignity and then proceeds to undercut this statement at every turn. It begins with the hypothesis that we are all sinners, unnaturally inclined to evil as a result of the original sin of the first people. Only Mary, the mother of Jesus, was conceived immaculate, without the stain of original sin. Since original sin, like many of the other entities postulated by the Church is mysterious and / or invisible, there is no way of telling what this means, let alone determining if it is true.

The Catholic Church is like a computer game, the software engineers being the Popes, bishops and theologians who keep adding new scenarios to the game play, dreamt up for their shock value ('virgin birth') rather than their truth.

Mental molestation: filling little children's heads with tales of snakes and apples, of sin and punishment, global floods and the salvation of the virtuous, the fiery destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, all presented as if they were true. This might be acceptable if presented as the fairy tales that they are, but this would not suit the Church's purpose to indoctrinate the newborn well before they develop any critical faculties. It is all for the best, they say, the history of salvation, but for those of us who have experienced what creeps so many of the servants of the Church are none of this is credible any more.

'It is a most beautiful and awe inspiring fact that all the laws of Classical Physics can be understood on terms of the mathematical construct called Action.. It yields the classical equations of motion and analysis of its invariants leads to quantities conserved in the course of classical motion. In addition, as Dirac and Feynman have shown, the Action acquires its full importance in Quantum Physics.' Ramond, Neuenschwander page 89. Raymond

[page 79]

The crux of the matter is that it is totally unnecessary to make God other than the Universe, it is a distinction based on a misunderstanding but by making the decision to embrace and enforce the misunderstanding, the Church has come to worship a false God and has forced a lot of erroneous policy in the human race, restricting our development mightily.

The second half of the current letter to Francis must recognize the benefits of accepting the view that the Universe is divine and the practical grounds for moving to scientific theology in the expectation of reaping benefits in the human social world analogous to the benefits yielded by the physical biological and mathematical sciences and consequent improvements in engineering,

Some of the excitement and motivation seems to hav gone ut of the natural religion project. Perhaps because we now have a government for which truth is meaningless, like the Bush era in America. Perhaps too much time working alone. perhaps just the oncoming tiredness of old age. Perhaps just laziness. Whatever. The usual consequence of a paragraph like this is new insight, new insight, new progress. The current task is to fit Noether's theorem into Unreasonable Effectiveness and I expect to see some light any moment, perhaps in the bath.

[page 80]

practical point of view I was. That is why I decided to become a Dominican. Perhaps I was motivated more by fear of hell than by love of God, but I did it nevertheless. My indoctrination was efficient and I still have some lingering respect for the Church as an effective organization even though I am pretty sure the whole thing is based on false ideas. Now I think I have the alternative, but do I believe in that? Once more, effectively yes, because I hope to make a living from my belief. in the human ecosystem in which I find myself. Do I feel it 'in my heart'? Yes and no. Yes because it is beautiful and strong. No because I see an immense task in front of me to make any headway along this course, faced by the contrary winds of ancient and widely attested institutional forces.

Raymond, Pierre, Field Theory, A Modern Primer, Westview Press 2001 'A good book to learn Feynman diagrams. A reader can learn how to compute the Green's functions and the scattering amplitudes using Feynman diagrams. The scalar Klein-Gordon field is used as a pedagogical example at the beginning. The philosophy of the path integral is used all over the book. However, the book does not emphasize the philosophy of the Wilson renormalization group and in this sense the primer is not modern. Nevertheless, Pierre Ramond is a pretty famous scientist and you can learn many things from this book.' Lubos Moti

Joseph Pohle, Catholic Encyclopedia: Sanctifying Grace, 'Grace (gratia, Charis), in general, is a supernatural gift of God to intellectual creatures (men, angels) for their eternal salvation, whether the latter be furthered and attained through salutary acts or a state of holiness. Eternal salvation itself consists in heavenly bliss resulting from the intuitive knowledge of the Triune God, who to the one not endowed with grace "inhabiteth light inaccessible" (1 Timothy 6:16). Christian grace is a fundamental idea of the Christian religion, the pillar on which, by a special ordination of God, the majestic edifice of Christianity rests in its entirety. Among the three fundamental ideas — sin, redemption, and grace — grace plays the part of the means, indispensable and Divinely ordained, to effect the redemption from sin through Christ and to lead men to their eternal destiny in heaven.' back

Silas R Beane et al, Constaints on the Universe as a Numerican Simulation, 'Abstract Observable consequences of the hypothesis that the observed universe is a numerical simulation performed on a cubic space-time lattice or grid are explored. The simulation scenario is first motivated by extrapolating current trends in computational resource requirements for lattice QCD into the future. Using the historical development of lattice gauge theory technology as a guide, we assume that our universe is an early numerical simulation with unimproved Wilson fermion discretization and investigate potentially-observable consequences. Among the observables that are considered are the muon g − 2 and the current differences between determinations of α, but the most stringent bound on the inverse lattice spacing of the universe, b−1>∼ 1011 GeV, is derived from the high-energy cut off of the cosmic ray spectrum. The numerical simulation scenario could reveal itself in the distributions of the highest energy cosmic rays exhibiting a degree of rotational symmetry breaking that reflects the structure of the underlying lattice.' back
