[Notebook: DB 80: Cosmic plumbing]

[page 86]

Sunday 22 May 2016

Lying in bed as snug as a bug in a rug, then in the bath, equally snug, trying to summon the spirit of Archimedes to explain the origins of space, fundamental particles and entropy at the big bang in terms of the network model and envisage the orderly emergence of the fixed points in the divine dynamics in parallel with the standard models of cosmology and particle physics. From the physicists' point of view the order parameter is decreasing temperature and increasing entropy in a 4D space-time already in existence. I am uncomfortable with the infinite temperature at the origin (since temperature is meaningless if there are not yet any particles), and I want to understand the creation of space in terms of fermions and bosons. Have been on this problem for years and want to create a bit of light in my mind. So coffee and read the news and wait for inspiration. Keep being tempted to throw the whole network thing out because I cannot see how it fits current quantum field theory. Quantum field theory - Wikipedia

Wiki QFT: A QFT treats particles as excited states of an underlying physical field, so these are called field quanta [field = law, particle = funded, ie implemented law].

Excited state: Higher energy than ground state.

Ground state: Lowest energy, zero point energy, processing rate to remain in existence, basic metabolic rate. Jérôme Martin: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Cosmologial Constant Problem (But Were Afraid To Ask)

Physical field: In QFT a field occupies space, contains energy and its presence eliminates the true vacuum.

Feynman: 'The fact that the electromagnetic field can possess momentum and energy makes it very real . . . a particle makes a field and the field acts on another particle, and the field has such familiar properties as energy content and momentum just as particles can have.' The field is bosons, the 'particles' fermions [?] Field (physics) - Wikipedia

Field: scalar, vector, spinor, tensor
Classical: numbers; quantum: operators

'. . . all particles . . . could be understood as quanta of some quantum field, elevating fields to the status of the most fundamental objects in nature.'

God is the ultimate boundary of the universe, closed at the beginning (past) open to the future.

I write and think with fear and trembling because so much of our received belief seems so wrong and the source of so much pain and suffering right up to genocide and crimes against humanity, but I cannot get it right. The foundation for my search for a new way is a new conception of god and reality which seeks to arrive at the same results from a different model, replacing many arbitrary and intuitively self-contradictory ideas of the nature of the world with something that seems natural and consistent but I cannot do it and this leads to a sort of despair. At present this centres on the excellent results of quantum field theory which nevertheless do not seem right to me. I think however, given my old age, to drop the quest and sit back and enjoy myself but I cannot do it. As I wrote long ago, I can charge these ideas until (what is left of) my teeth rattle and make no progress. Such is the mystery of insight [decoding the world]. But there is no turning back and if I keep going I might get to the light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile as far as practical reality goes I am beautifully supported by the society I live in and want to give something back for the benefits I receive and can see no better way than to go on with the task of putting theology on a new foundation that opens our minds to the creative power of the world we occupy to give us all the space to live.

My answer to depression is always action, and I am back at it and happy again.

[page 89]

Writing seems to be more stressful than carpentry, perhaps because it involves continuous uncertainty and the resolution of problems, whereas carpentry, once a problem has been solved, leads to a period of relatively unconscious work putting the solution into reality using the standardized methods of the trade, Now that grandparenthood is constraining me to full time writing I fid myself getting tireder than through physical work.

Gravitational singularity = space-time curvature becomes infinite [?].

Reading about Ramanujan and being reminded that I am so unqualified to work on a mathematical revolution in theology but have no choice (like Burke and Wills) but to go on until someone with a bit of talent takes on the job. Friday 27 May 2016

Reading a lot of cosmological stuff full of hypotheticals and would love to see my baby do better, but not much hope. The basic problem seems to be where does all the energy come from - how does almighty god spring into life? Another problem for me is how do a large number of particles come into existence? Physics and cosmology seem to think they just happen when there is enough energy around, but how and how are they given their specific behaviours and connections [all comes from the fields, but where do the fields come from?]. Always waiting for inspiration, but have not got far in the last fifty years.

From logic to arithmetic may work a bit like from gaussian coordinates to metric.

Comment to Commonweal:

The Church, the 'mystical body of Christ', is a massive entity that has gained enormous momentum over the last two thousand years. Many of us can see that it is going in the wrong direction, categorizing everyone as sinners, denying justice to the victims of aberrant clergy, dividing people into believers and unbelievers, treating women as lesser beings, dogmatically enforcing beliefs that make no sense, and so on. These instituional failings are plain to see through their contrast to modern liberal, democratic evidence based society. The turnaround is essentially a political task, drumming up the numbers for change, so encounter and dialogue are rightly at the centre of Francis' attempt to bring the Church into the 21st century. Robert Mickens: Does Dialogue Require "Renunciation of Truth"?

Martin: page 2: 'Indeed from the Heisenberg uncertainty principles we know that the ground state energy of the quantum harmonic oscillator cannot be zero because the potential and kinetic energies cannot vanish at the same time [even though their sum is zero?].' Jérôme Martin: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Cosmologial Constant Problem (But Were Afraid To Ask)

[page 92]

Martin page 2: Since a (free) quantum field can be viewed as an infinite collection of harmonic oscillators, it immediately comes that the ground state energy must be infinite.'

'Vacuum fluctuations could be a mathematical artefact of the quantum field theory framework . . . '

page 4: Zero point fluctuations gravitate - because they are a form of energy.

One would expect the universe to be quite simple at the fundamental level, but the baroque computations in Martin (and elsewhere in the field theory literature) suggest that this is not the case. A lot of the problem arises, I feel, because the ancient simplicities are now embedded in the complex modern world and this complexifies them just as simple electromagnetic interactions become exceedingly complex in, say, a living body. It may also be that much of this complexity arises from the use of continuous mathematics in regions where the universe may be simply digital.

page 77: '. . . there is no time operator because time is not a dynamical variable.'

We measure time by integrating the transitions of the clock from p to ~p (1 to 0). These transitions may occur at 'random' intervals but we have no clock anterior to this natural clock which generates energy. So we may as well assume that Δt = n.ticks. [Development, Chapter 4: Physics, page 4: Energy]

Dynamical variables change with time. Times does not change with time.

[page 95]

Would like to think that the quantum theoretical insolubility of the cosmological constant problem is an opening for the network approach to quantum gravity [Feynman diagrams, an infinite superposition of networks, maybe]. Feynman diagram - Wikipedia

What we are thinking is that something like the metric expansion of space points to the scale invariance of Plank's constant in the sense that there is but one 'master' quantum of action in any event even if this event involves vast number of quanta of action like my lifetime or a supernova, eg a halted computation is measured by one quantum of action even if it involves a huge number of quantum operations like elementary nands. This enables us to see the whole as actus purus analogous to the classical god, at the same time involving a transfinite number of quantum actions corresponding to every event (fixed point) in the divine dynamics. Keep rattling the bones and something might come out.

Weinberg page 32: 'The essence of the new theories is that the weak and strong interactions are described in a way that is almost identical to the successful older quantum field theory of electromagnetic interactions. Just as electromagnetic interactions among charged particles are produced by the exchange of photons, so the weak interactions are produced by the exchange of particles called intermediate vector bosons and the strong interaction by the exchange of particles called gluons. All these particles — photons, intermediate vector bosons and gluons — have equal spin and have interactions governed by powerful symmetry principles known as gauge symmetries. (A gauge symmetry principle states that the fundamental equations do not change their form when the fields are subjected to certain transformations whose effect varies with position and time.)

[page 94]

Because these theories are so similar to quantum electrodynamics they share its fundamental property of being renormalizable. Indeed the relation between weak and electromagnetic interactions is not merely one of analogy — the theory unites the two and treats the fields of the photon and the intermediate vector bosons as members of a single family of fields. Steven Weinberg: The Search for Unity: Notes for a History of Quantum Field Theory, Gauge theory - Wikipedia

Weinberg page 34: There are very few renormalizable quantum field theories. For instance it is possible to construct quantized theories of electromagnetism in which the electron has any magnetic moment we like, but only one of these of these theories, corresponding to a magnetic moment of 1.0011596523 . . . times the Dirac value, is renormalizable. . . .We very much need a guiding principle like renormalizability to help pick the quantum theory of the real world out of the infinity of conceivable quantum field theories.

Christie, Agatha, Passenger to Frankfurt, Amereon 1983 Amazon Customer Review: 'Agatha Christie wrote several novels that deal with international organizations trying to take over the world. While I prefer her works set in the cozy country estates with families full of suspects, this is an enjoyable foray into this type of her work. Tones of neo-Nazism, drug trafficking, international finance, and a scientific discovery that could change the world are some of the elements that make up this story. The characters are interesting: Sir Stafford Nye, an unambitious member of the British diplomatic corps caught up in this caper; his great-aunt Matilda, an aristocratic lady reminiscent of Miss Marple in that she has a remarkable memory of things that happened long ago; a young girl with three identities who fears for her life, and a young man rumored to be the son of Adolph Hitler are among the characters that come to life in this novel.' Men with guns descended upon unsuspecting encampments, killing men, women and children; they were killed, as one settler wrote later, “whenever [the Gunai] can be met with”. Fermion - Wikipedia, Fermion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 'In particle physics, fermions are particles with a half-integer spin, such as protons and electrons. They obey the Fermi-Dirac statistics and are named after Enrico Fermi. In the Standard Model there are two types of elementary fermions: quarks and leptons. . . . In contrast to bosons, only one fermion can occupy a quantum state at a given time (they obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle). Thus, if more than one fermion occupies the same place in space, the properties of each fermion (e.g. its spin) must be different from the rest. Therefore fermions are usually related with matter while bosons are related with radiation, though the separation between the two is not clear in quantum physics. back
