Evolution is a communication process between individuals and their environment, so we can imagine an ecosystem as a network that supports many attempts at life, some of which reproduce and succeed, some of which are selected out. My honours thesis is in effect such a creature in the academic / theological / universal ecosystem and the number of copies of it downloaded on the internet gives some clue to its reproductive survival capacity. What it is trying to do now is attract the funding to reproduce itself in even greater detail as a PhD thesis / book.

In other words, an ecosystem works very much like a mind, structures are multiplied by copying and extinguished by computational conflict, creation and annihilation.

The test for everything is does it work? Does the engine run? Does the software produce a good result? Does the mating result in a living child? Does the policy bring peace and prosperity, etc etc. To work means an effective sequence or network of actions. At present I am working. I am alive. The universe also works, it is alive. Given the random element in every complex process, to work is to be able to correct errors and prevent fatal errors.

What is my PhD question? Is natural theology viable?

Cohen, Paul J, Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis, Benjamin/Cummings 1966-1980 Preface: 'The notes that follow are based on a course given at Harvard University, Spring 1965. The main objective was to give the proof of the independence of the continuum hypothesis [from the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms for set theory with the axiom of choice included]. To keep the course as self contained as possible we included background materials in logic and axiomatic set theory as well as an account of Gödel's proof of the consistency of the continuum hypothesis. . . .'

West, Richard, Daniel Defoe: The Life and Strange Adventures, Carroll & Graf 1998 'West, a journalist and travel writer, provides a nonscholarly yet detailed and sympathetic biography of Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), an author who was also adept at journalism, pamphleteering, and fiction and travel literature. Known today for such novels as Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders, Defoe was initially famous for his polemical writings on politics, religion, and social issues. West also details 17th- and 18th-century England, and?though readers may periodically feel inundated by the wealth of information?establishes the political and social climate that shaped Defoe's life and literature. By the end, readers will feel compelled to return to the works discussed. Recommended for all public and academic libraries; those that have the more scholarly biography by Paula Backscheider (Daniel Defoe: His Life, LJ 10/15/89) will want to add West's book for readers who desire a more popular overview of Defoe's career and written achievements.?Morris Hounion, New York City Technical Coll. Cancer - Wikipedia, Cancer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 'Cancer, known medically as a malignant neoplasm, is a broad group of diseases involving unregulated cell growth. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, and invading nearby parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not invade neighboring tissues and do not spread throughout the body. There are over 200 different known cancers that affect humans.' back

In addition to the money it’s paid to Gulf Coast residents and businesses, it has paid $20 billion to settle suits brought by states and the federal government; a $4 billion fine levied by the U.S. Department of Justice; and $32 billion toward the cleanup. That comes to about $70 billion—so far.' back

Suzanne O.Connell, Scientists have been drilling into the ocean floor for 50 years - here's what they have found so far, ' It’s stunning but true that we know more about the surface of the moon than about the Earth’s ocean floor. Much of what we do know has come from scientific ocean drilling – the systematic collection of core samples from the deep seabed. This revolutionary process began 50 years ago, when the drilling vessel Glomar Challenger sailed into the Gulf of Mexico on August 11, 1968 on the first expedition of the federally funded Deep Sea Drilling Project. But McKay lived from 1889 to 1948, and was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Now, a century after that movement began, “Romance in Marseille” will finally be published for the first time on Feb. 11. Its debut coincides with recent shifts in thinking about the Renaissance, which is increasingly seen as grappling not only with race but with class, gender, sexuality and nationality.' back
