[Notebook: DB 83: Physical Theology]

[page 341]

What is God? Big and supremely intelligent, to become more so if the people of the world could fuse themselves into one mind.

The universe is an enormous system of coupled elementary events arranged hierarchically in layers. We believe that the most complex structure in the universe is out planet Earth, and we have spent the last few hundred thousand year of travel and communication adding another layer to the noosphere hoping to preserve our planet long enough to enjoy the fruits of our labour. (Marx [Stedman Jones page 389]) Stedman Jones: Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion

What is the point of the final chapter? The roles of God

1. The universe is infinite 2. The universe is an intelligent designer

[page 342]

3. The universe is creative.

We can think of individual creatures as subsets (or elements) of the universe. A set can be an element of a set and the empty set, the archetypical element, is an element of every set. So we think of a dynamic set theory where the empty sets are the quanta of action (empty, from an observer's point of view) because we cannot see behind them, and we can imagine that at first glance there are 0 empty sets (empty operations) in the universe that give us 1 complex operations which communicate by exchanging subsets [by combinations and permutations?].

Unknown unknowns. I do not even know what I want to know until I know it. I want to round out my thesis with a simple / logical / mathematical model of an intelligent layered network, each layer comprising n independent semi-enclosed systems most of whose activity is within themselves with much less frequent communication with their environment, much greater internal than external bandwidth, an implementation of the invisibility theorem and a model of the atom, the cell and the brain.

The world structures itself step by step, like atoms or unicellular creatures, being self sufficient but open to exploitation by higher layers. Lower layers are stronger and violence drives systems back toward them. This has

[page 343]

been an idea all along but I have forgotten to include it in my thesis and my essays on morality and peer layers. Now it has come back into my consciousness and serves again as the key to the value of the layered network.

Every moment is a new layer, the future is a transformation of the past with the past and future connected by a fundamental symmetry, the conservation of energy, the conservation of bandwidth. Every point is also a new layer, joined by conservation of momentum. So what is the symmetry of action, conservation of angular momentum? Every direction is a new layer. A moment is an event, a communication (coupling) in space-time.

When times get tough change down and maintain power at the revolutions of maximum power. My power is that I have infinite reduction, no bottom gear.

The traditional God created the whole universe in one move which is no more possible than bringing a dead person back to life. Instead God has grown, a process we call ontogenesis, which is a compressed local form of phylogenesis, cresting an individual life rather than the tree of life, which begins with the big bang and may never end, at least not in a trillion years or so. Evolution occurs in layers, generations of minuscule changes. Life works by a similar process, each generation a moment in time spread across as local space, the forward and backward light cones of the moment, its ancestors and descendants.

This thesis is the preface to a larger thesis that takes this story down to its roots in quantum mechanics, the causality that lies behind the phenomena described here, going to the heart of divinity.

The detailed structure of matter is the representative vehicle for information as this paper and this ink carry this sentence which gets its meaning from my mind and all the experience I have gathered in nearly 75 years of life in the incredibly detailed structure of the material universe.

Woodruff: Nan Elizabeth Woodruff: The Forgotten History of America's Worst Racial Massacre

Evolution works like a ratchet, stepping forward much more frquently than it steps back and taking advantage of extinction events to develop new ideas like mammals and birds.

Without going into the quantum theoretical background I nevertheless assume that the observable behaviour of quantum systems is rational and logically consistent and can therefore be modelled by a computer network.

Gravitation orders the layers of structure from foundations which can be the strongest and simplest through layers if increasing complexity

[page 345]

and decreasing strength until we arrive at the roof. Or look at the . . .

The digital network model enables us to stretch and compress time, an instant varying from a quantum of action to the reproduction of dinosaurs, each a logical process the first one quantum and the second a huge number and this same symmetry enables us to see the evolution and collision of galaxies in the same light.

Application for Masters/PhD. My honours thesis is a brief commentary on the Prima parsof Aquinas' Summa. My PhD project would be to carry this forward to the moral / ethical / political subjects covered in the second part of the Summa.

China 70th. We are still so primitive that nations celebrate their birthdays by exhibiting their war machines. Chan & Zen Minnie Chan & Liu Zhen

What do I think about my thesis? A bit like a movie. A lot of scenes that fit together if you watch the whole thing, the end explains the beginning, although I am now trying to explain things a bit more up front, and since I know no one will read the references, explaining the technicalities a bit more, although I have yet to take on the source entropy in the communication theory, although I am thinking this might be necessary to explain that a perfectly coded message is indistinguishable from noise to the listener without access to the codec.

More to the point, has it got a future? Is it the foundation for a

[page 346]

PhD? Yes, I think, to consolidate the theory and then develop the moral implications rather like the Summa from God and creation through the moral life to salvation. My ambition has always been to make strides in both physics and peace and I think (hope) that they feed on each other insofar as the truth of physics, which was worked out near the beginning [of the world] because things there were simple and worked fast, can clarify the search for peace in the emerging space of human global unity. Is this exciting? Sort of, especially if I can make it work.

For most of my life I have been living by the skin of my intellectual teeth, skimming along on the surface of things trying to get a comprehensive picture of the world. The logical network idea, founded on the notion that the observable universe is at its root consistent seems to be serving well, and suggesting that it will provide an observable model which can be used to penetrate the cloak of invisibility surrounding the inner workings of the world to carry the logical / digital / boolean project to the core and overcome all the weirdnesses and inconsistencies that infest quantum theory and quantum field theory whose root I think is the inability to see that logic, rather than continuity, is what connects the parts of the world together to make things like me.

Thesis Chapter 2: Evolution. We see the universe as a closed system emerging within the initial singularity as exemplified by the Trinity in God, by self reference. A lot

[page 347]

of the problems in quantum field theory appear to originate with self reference, like the self energy of the electron. One wonder why if this were true why this infinite self energy does not dissipate itself by the creation of an infinite number of new electrons, although that would just compound the problem. On the other had we can go back to the fixed point story and point out that from a mathematical point of view a closed, compact, convex universe is ripe to create a fixed point and once it has one it can begin to produce a new fixed point per mapping. What can I write from my empty bored head? The thesis seems to be as far as I can go but I am not there yet and do not know how to get there, looking for the insight, the intellectual orgasm that will not come despite 70 years of trying and writing rather boring stories about getting there. I want to be Einstein, but I am not. The bit I am missing is a grasp of the spirit of the universe expressed in the ancient phrase, God is love. Einstein was disappointed, I think because he did not get to write a theory of everything. Where he went wrong (I think) [was] that he was stuck in the real numbers and continuity and could not face the logical quantized nature of the Universe. So much for this idea, but where does it get me? The next big idea is Lonergan's Insight, the book that started me on this quest. The Universe creates itself by insight, and the thing I really want is to show [is] that insight is the natural product of networks at all scales running from networks at the quantum level to the Universe as a whole, and the key to it is somehow fixed point theory, the development of stationary energy levels, as we see in the spectra of atom, and this, in a vibrating string, is a matter of stationary nodes induced in the string or organ pipe by fixed endpoints, so the initial singularity induces structure in the universe by love.

[page 348]

I owe it to my parent to be destiny's child.

The steps between quantum states, like the energy levels of atoms, are all accompanied [measured] by an integral number of quanta of action.

Turing showed that there is a limit to what a computer can do, but what can an infinite number of computers do when networked? Aristotle and Aquinas lived in such a simple world where infinity had a simple meaning. Now we have the transfinite numbers and we want to map them to the universal network via the correspondence between natural numbers and Turing machines.

Brand, Russell, My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs and Stand-Up, Collins 2009 Jacket: ' Russell Brand learned early on to make a joke of fear and failure. From a troubled childhood in industrial Essex, England, to his descent into addictions to alcohol, drugs, and sex in the seamy underbelly of London, Brand has seen his share of both and miraculously lived to tell the tale. In My Booky Wook he leads readers on a rollicking journey through his disastrous school career, his infamous antics on MTV, and his multifarious sexual adventures. But this irreverent memoir is a story not simply of struggle but also of redemption, a testament to the difficulty of discovering what you want from life and the remarkable power of a bloody-minded determination to get it. My Booky Wook is a giddy trip through the brilliant mind of one of Britain's most valuable exports.'

Alan Rushbridger, End front-page falsehoods and regain the public's trust, ' . . . good democracy relies on good information. What does “good information” look like? We might say: information that is not only true but also believed. And therein lies the problem. We’re no longer very willing to believe almost anybody. Most surveys of trust find very little faith in what government or politicians tell us. But there are also extraordinarily low levels of trust in most media. Nearly two-thirds of people say they can no longer tell good journalism from rumour or falsehoods. This is, to put it mildly, a disaster. Into this vacuum of unbelief and mistrust step liars and peddlers of fantasies.' back
