Always trying to step back and gain perspective on the complex issues of the interface between humanity and the world, which appears to me to be the role of the theologian: to develop a model of the space we occupy and plot a path through our space. Long ago I began to think of the human trajectory in abstract term as a geodesic in a differentiable manifold and this idea has guided much of what I have written. In the theory of gravitation, which seems to be the fundamental theory of the structure of the universe, a geodesic is the path of free fall. Earth is freely falling around the Sun and he Moon around the Earth on paths determined by local spacetime. From a gravitational point of view, I am participating in the Earth's free fall but my personal trajectory is my interaction with the Earth's local gravitational influence that keeps me stuck to the planet, so my motion is modified by the local space that I occupy, not just gravitatinal, but through all the other physical and social forces acting on me. Nevertheless, by considering alll the potential in my environment, I can still imagine my trajectory as a geodesic in this enormously complex

[page 63]

space of potentials, and my path through life as a path of least resistance taking all this into account deciding when to go with the flow and when to try to tke advantage of my circumstances to steer myself in a different direction, rather as a spacecraft uses rocketry to steer itself onto a new course which is once again a geodesic. All my inputs come from the space I occupy. All my outputs modify my trajectory through my local space. My conscious and unconscious processing works to optimize my trajectory. As we work from gravitation through the standard model to daily life, we add layers of complexity to the overall picture, and it is the task of my theology, as my local theory of everything, to navigate myself through this space, often a difficult task.

The movie industry is devoted to depicting people moving in complex and difficult spaces: a derivative of the more abstract industries of written literature, realized in the more complex venue of real life.

Now, at the end of the acadmemic year, I am of necessity contemplating a course change, and it looks as though the best option is to revert to the priest trade that I left 52 year ago, now renamed ministry. Minister (Christianity) - Wikipedia.

I do not want to be a Christian minister, since the role implies too much deviation from reality. The only clear course I can see is as a writer of a PhD thesis on a scientifically realistic ministry.

W do not need a digital foundation to build a cognitive cosmology, a fact demonstrated by the neural structure of the human mind. What is important is the network structure and the fact that networks tend to be inherently digital, as we see in the spike nature of the action potential in the mind. The data is carried by timing of the spikes however and this is effectively a continuous variable which can be imitated in a binary digital system by marking the timing between spikes by strings of zeros. In the neural system the role of timing lies in the integration times that neurons use to decide whether or not to fire, and the arrangement of synapses as excitatory or inhibitory of their parent neuron. Perhaps we would do better to found the computational universe on the neural network model rather than the clocked logic of a standard silicon computer.

on the integration of phases rather like Feynman's path integral system in which we imagine the synapses to be states feeding phased data to the neural integrator to decide whether or not to fire and activate a heap of other synapses at the end of its axon. So we can map the network structure of the brain to a Hilbert space with approximately orthogonal subspaces [the 'modules of mind'] and maybe begin to think of an action potential emitted into an axon whose branches take it to many other neurons since an action potential is self propagating drawing energy from the potential across the axonal wall as it goes along without attenuation and maintaining its timing relative to other spikes travelling in the same axon at the same speed (the local neural speed of light). 4 Non Blondes What's Up. Where did all my passion go? Squashed by the weight of life, but I am not squashed, I am ploughing head and moving out of theology into religion, out of science into technology, out of academia into ministry. My ambition greatly exceeds my power, but that does not really worry me, I just have to keep my foot down as long as I have the resources to go on, and I am very well endowed with pension and inheritance [Linda Perry is worried about 25 years, me 75]. 4 Non Blondes, Linda Perry - Wikipedia

Every time I pick up a pen I do it with the intention of broadening and deepening my understanding of myself and my world, whether I write one word or many thousands. Here is the source of much of the friction between myself and my teachers, insofar as they are trying to steer me into the known and accepted world of their profession whereas that for me is simply a scaffold which I mean to use to build my own picture of the world which often remains poorly focussed and disconnected, failing to get the results that guarantee me progress in the profession. How this will work in the Doctorate of Ministry I do not know. Tomorrow I will

[page 66]

try to write a case that will get me in, based on a fusion of modern theological cosmology and the indigenous religions that out their faith in the spirituality of nature.

Message from Mungo Oliver Milman: Message from Mungo: mother of all battles to bring Aboriginal ancestors home, Andrew Pike & Ann McGrath

Thursday 19 December 2019

Physicists might be making a big blue dividing the quantum of action into infinitesimal steps in order to apply calculus to it when it is inherently an atomic unit. This behaviour seems to be motivated by the notion that the vacuum is infinite and in effect continuous, so that even though they do non-perturbative computations on the lattice, they still feel obliged to use Feynman's path integral to reduce the lattice spacing to zero. Implicit in this view is the notion that the evolution of the complex wave function is deterministic. This means that it makes some sense to break transformations down to infinitesimal steps and integrate, but where do we stand if the infinitesimal steps are fictitious and the world in fact proceeds by logical steps which are from the point of view of continuous mathematics non-linear? Maybe the linearity of quantum mechanics enshrined in the superposition principle is fictitious. Here I go again criticising physics when I have sworn to give it up because it has become too complex to understand. We seem to be in the world of astronomical epicycles where the

[page 67]

fictitious principle that all heavenly motion is [perfect and therefore] circular led astronomers astray for nearly 2000 years from Aristotle and co to Kepler. Here the illusion is that causality demands continuity and continuity implies determinism. I want to break out of this picture, which is 2500 years old, but I have to learn a lot of phenomenal physics to do it. Looking back I feel that my thesis does seem to have something to say about this. I just have to wait and see what the philosophy dept thinks. Feynman & Hibbs: Quantum Mechanics and Path Integrals , Michael Creutz: Quarks Gluons and Lattices, Heinz J, Rothe: Lattice Gauge Theories (An Introduction)

To implement the logical view of the world it becomes necessary to think again about all our scientific observations. This could be a big job which might be simplified by looking (as I have done to some extent) at thermodynamics which is the most basic of sciences that really only needs a thermometer and a pressure gauge and is clearly related to statistical mechanics and the theory of information and communication.

Feynman, Richard P, and Albert P Hibbs, Quantum Mechanics and Path Integrals, McGraw Hill 1965 Preface: 'The fundamental physical and mathematical concepts which underlie the path integral approach were first developed by R P Feynman in the course of his graduate studies at Princeton, ... . These early inquiries were involved with the problem of the infinte self-energy of the electron. In working on that problem, a "least action" principle was discovered [which] could deal succesfully with the infinity arising in the application of classical electrodynamics.' Fodor, Jerry A, The Modularity of Mind, MIT Press 1983 Jacket: 'This monograph synthesizes current information from the various fields of cognitive science in support of a new and exciting theory of mind. Most psychologists study horizontal processes like memory. Fopdor postulates a vertical and modular psychological organisation underlying biologically coherent behaviours. This view of mental architecture is consistent with the historical tradition of faculty psychology while integrating a computational approach to mental processes. One of the most notable aspects of Fodor's work is that it articulates features not only of speculative cognitive architectures but also of current research in artificial intelligence.' Rothe, Heinz J., Lattice Gauge Theories (An Introduction), World Scientific 2012 ' This book provides a broad introduction to gauge field theories formulated on a space-time lattice, and in particular of QCD. It serves as a textbook for advanced graduate students, and also provides the reader with the necessary analytical and numerical techniques to carry out research on his own. Although the analytic calculations are sometimes quite demanding and go beyond an introduction, they are discussed in sufficient detail, so that the reader can fill in the missing steps. The book also introduces the reader to interesting problems which are currently under intensive investigation. Whenever possible, the main ideas are exemplified in simple models, before extending them to realistic theories. Special emphasis is placed on numerical results obtained from pioneering work. These are displayed in a great number of figures. Beyond the necessary amendments and slight extensions of some sections in the third edition, the fourth edition includes an expanded section on Calorons -- a subject which has been under intensive investigation during the last twelve years.'

The Brazil-led efforts, European negotiators and climate activists say, would lead to double-counting of emission reductions and usher in a trove of carbon credits granted under the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris accord’s predecessor. Erin Wilson, Reason, Reflection, Resistance, Revolution? Experiments with the Post-Secular Part I, ' The Religion Factor is self-consciously a post-secular blog. But what exactly is post-secular? In our first two installments, we explore this relatively new idea as both a description of and a response to the conditions of 21st century society. . . . The emergence of the post-secular means that traditional binary oppositions such as secular/religious, public/private, history/progress, reason/emotion are beginning to break down. We are recognizing that perhaps it is not so easy to neatly and clearly separate domains of human existence that are so intimately connected, and also perhaps that it is not entirely necessary to do so. Instead of being faced with an either/or choice – something is either religious or secular, public or private, rational or emotional, and cannot ever be both – it is now possible to see elements of life, society and politics as both religious and secular, without any seeming contradiction. It may even be possible to have public debate that incorporates both secular and religious arguments.' back

Erin Wilson, Experiments with the Post-Secular Part II, ' Jurgen Habermas offers us perhaps the most comprehensive outline of the post-secular as a prescription. His main objective, it seems to me, is to move us beyond secular assumptions about political participation that exclude religious reasoning and argumentation from public debate. He posits two main reasons for this. Firstly, contrary to expectations, religion has not died out and is in fact stronger than ever. Rather than bothering with questions of whether religion should be part of public life or not, Habermas instead accepts that it is, that it will likely remain so and our politics and public life should reflect that reality. Secondly, Habermas is responding to the growing challenges to human existence in the 21st century. Increasing inequality, multiple moral and ethical dilemmas and mounting social and environmental crises all highlight that something is desperately wrong with politics as usual. For Habermas, then, the post-secular also offers a way of resisting dominant neoliberal, secular rationalist modes of thinking, offering the potential for alternatives and transformation.' back
