The design and marketing of natural religion. The religion is a vehicle to

[page 262]

implant the attitudes and discoveries [of scientific theology] into the minds of children in order to give them an adaptive foundation to enjoy life.

Religion and Educational theory.

JOY/ENJOY

We have to encapsulate both TRUTH and PATH to TRUTH in a readily marketable and assimilable form to teach, in the long run, the balance between the simplicity and complexity/predictability and unpredictability of life.

The old religions are like blind persons and elephant, mostly tainted with the political structure that made their enormous expansion (and accompanying extinction of other religions) possible. Natural religion is compatible with and contains all the good and bad features of all other religions which are, in fact, natural religions whatever they may think of themselves. It is an illusion to think that we can step outside nature, that is

[page 263]

the visible manifestation of divinity.

Religion site makes broad assertions (unfounded except artistically and emotionally) whose roots will be found on the Theology Site.

The theology site exposes the scientific basis (models and data) [such as it is] upon which the religion site bases its assertions. Human knowledge evolves by a process exactly analogous to genetic evolution, by variation and selection. The size of variations and the pressure of selection range over enormous ranges from something comparable to the work of Einstein to the smallest skeric of knowledge picked up by a dreaming schoolchild. From a scale invariant point of view, all these are the same.

PhD Ctee: I had hoped by now to have a postgraduate award of some sort, but instead I am on the Newstart Allowance and to remain on the allowance must go onto self employment development which is pushing me to go commercial in the religion industry before the necessary

[page 264]

period a product development. Nothing is really lost here, as technology tends to lead science, so that we have long been able to practice horticulture with no knowledge of genetics, selection of biochemistry, ecology etc etc, sciences which all contribute to improving agricultural productivity and reducing the environmental impact of food production per individual.

Like all religions, we are offering some form of heaven, in this case not heaven in a next life. And like most religions, heaven is a state of mind reached partly by manipulating ourselves and partly by manipulating our environment ,which includes other people and ultimately the whole Universe.

Religion is concerned with the intelligent management of very complex systems, ourselves and our environment. Here we apply de Maupertuis and symmetry with respect to complexity.

Monday 21 August 2000

So we need a creed:

[page 265]

I believe in symmetry - father stability
complexity - son meaning
process - spirit evolution/action

"Is the Universe divine: a dissertation on the nature of spirit"

Christian (Lonergan) blunder "the world is meaningless without the assumption of an alien god".

ie TREE is rooted in GOD rather than NETWORK is rooted in ITSELF = GOD.

A tree is not > but ><, ie a node [illustration] with incoming and outgoing channels.

Theories of statistics and probability are recursive. The trinity as explained by Thomas has no natural termination. It was terminated at three (for T) by the nature

of the mind/intellect/will model.

PhD: Conflate my essays with my thesis outline and other material to produce the MA Thesis which will be submitted as a starter for PhD.

Is the Universe divine? A position on the nature of spirit. - [Angels are] All different species.

Start now: First tailshaft bearing, fuel tank and steering gear.

MA Thesis: Intimidation: tripods over the altars of my mind. Let it flow free and the complexity will arise from consistency.

CONSISTENCY (ie elimination of error) leads to COMPLEXITY (since an error free system has higher resolution than a system prone to error). Resolution = error/measure (eg plus or minus 1 degree etc).

register NATURAL.SPIRIT.COM (it will be a miracle if it is not taken.)

SPIRIT == ORDERED SET OF ACTIONS

CREATION = creation of new meaning

NEW MEANING = NEW BOND (this goes with that, x goes with y)

Thesis: We wish to give new meaning to the distinction between geistes- and naturwisschenshaften by showing the symmetry. ie the bonding that unites them.

natural-spirit.com. Like it!

This is equivalent to equating Occam's Razor with the principle of least action.

Domestic mappings: from supermarket shelves to kitchen shelves.

MATTER = INTEGERS; SPIRIT = REALS

Material: goes from one place to another
Spiritual: coexists in many places

Ultimate objective: To catalyze a paradigm shift in the religions of the world toward a scientific and realistic assessment of the human condition with the prospect of ameliorating all human lives to a state properly described as heavenly.

This state has public and private components.

Prayer: WORD to REALITY.

In Lonergan we see the blunder brought on by the Christian arrogance that god is somehow their special mate and that they have got knowledge about how the world works that is not granted to others.

Tooth pain makes me conscious of time - will it never end until I get to the dentist, 2.30 on the 30th, 160 hours time!

[page 271]

De Maupertuis: minimum action = integral h nu dt [illustration]

Competition minimizes action in that the beast that can get from a to be with the least effort is fittest. Why does one depress one's fitness by drugs? Error? Or is the breadth of vision worth more in fitness gained than the physical fitness lost. Drugs tend to imitate an exhausted/wounded/dysfunctional state, driving the homeostatic mechanisms to more energetic corrective action.

Like all businesses I am offering god news with a view to reward. If the market decides that I truly have a better mousetrap my chances of reaping come revenue increase. In the case of mousetraps, I simply sell them at a profitable price and the more I sell the more I make. As goods become more spiritual the revenue question becomes more difficult.

The religious upheaval we call the Reformation began as a corrective reaction to the increasing awareness of unacceptable business practices on the part of the Catholic Church then (in the 'west') the only form of Christianity.

All the cosmic love of god, crucifixion etc etc is meant to communicate in some way how we should love one another, but it works on a rather restricted definition of love arising from the rather restricted ('immaterial') personality of god. We go for broadband (transfinite) love, always embracing the infinite to create new infinities, ie new things bigger (more complex) than what already exists. Every moment of time adds a new layer to the onion of meaning, or more precisely, a new dimension to cosmic space.

The wave function of the Universe. QM logically talk about this.

NATURE: MA THESIS:Is the Universe divine. Begin with "Many Worlds" (de Witt, 1973)

Here we make a serious start on getting into the PhD trade, under the auspices of SED.

[page 272]

The founding paper.

What can we say about the wave function of the Universe? 1: what is a wave function

first: gravitation

1: The wave function of the Universe big psi (u) [illustration]. Symmetry of qm and the standard interpretation. From local to global. How do wave functions cohere? To see this we look at some features of Hilbert Space . . . and so

2: Map wave function to Cantor Universe. Use this abstract formulation to describe action.

3. Comment on the size of this system and how it tends toward god.

4 Physical application: gravitation and the transfinite network. The wave function of gravitation lies in the structure of space limited only by consistency.

[page 273]

Non-location, gravitation and Cantor Space.

CANTOR Universe <-> EINSTEIN Universe: Transfinite network <-> 4D manifold

The gravitational particle is built into the structure of space - DUALITY

4 Physical application, ie mapping model to reality.

a) elements of sets are 'actions'. action = {action}

b) there is a smallest action, measured by h bar [illustration]

c) the rate of action in the Universe is measured by the cardinal of the naturals, ℵ0 and this imposes the fundamental conservation law/symmetry conservation of energy. Parallel processing.

d) structure of action determined by wave function, which establishes probabilities for sequences of actions, and so for all processes in the Universe (since each process is a sequence of actions, macroscopic or microscopic)

e) local structure -> global structure

[page 274]

5. Details: quantum field theories: gravitation, electrodynamics, weak, strong.

6. given fit and size of model we conclude Universe is big enough to be called divine.

Religions tend to be developed by mystics and lunatics and so have extreme elements which express mystical and lunatic vision. Here we avoid this by having a completely normal unremarkable bloke trying to express a completely normal and unmemorable religion which fits reality like a glove and consistently deliver the best advice for dealing with the situations of life.

BEST ADVICE = MOST PEACEFUL OUTCOME

Ultimately, religious stories tend to be attempts to control society by the most neurotic, whereas the opposite should be the case - control should be distributed. local, robust and consistent across the community.

PROTESTANTISM - NATIONALISM. Natural

[page 275]

religion allows no boundaries between individuals and so is down on nationalism, except for administrative efficiency.

The time has come to speak of transfinite HEADROOM and GAIN-RANGING as prerequisites for gaining the necessary dynamic range to keep the vehicle under control.

MA THESIS: Intro: Quote MTW and put the question in 'cartoon' historical perspective. This history is not meant to represent so much what actually happened (which is beyond our ken) but to draw some sort of curve through the points defined by the literary remnants of that past which fall into the general category theological/religious/political.

de Witt, Bryce S and Neill Graham (eds) , and Hugh Everett III, J A Wheeler, B S DeWitt, L N Cooper, D van Vechten, N Graham (contributors), The Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, Princeton UP 1973 Jacket: 'A novel interpretation of quantum mechanics, first proposed in brief form by Hugh Everett in 1957, forms the nucleus around which this book is developed. The volume contains Dr Everett's short paper from 1957, "'Relative State' Formulation of Quantum Mechanics", and a far longer exposition of his interpretation, entitled "The Theory of the Universal Wave Function", never before published. In addition, other papers by De Witt, Graham and Cooper and van Vechtem provide further dicussion of the same theme. Together they constitute virtually the entire world output of scholarly commentary on the Everett interpretation.'

Huang, Kerson, Statistical Mechanics, John Wiley 1987 'Preface: . . . The purpose of this book is to teach statistical mechanics as an integral part of theoretical phyiscs, a discipline that aims to describe all natural phenomena on the basis of a single unifying theory. This theory, at present, is quantum mechanics. . . . Before the subject of statistical mechanics proper is presented, a brief but self contained discussion of thermodynamics and the classical kinetic theory of gases is given. The order of this devlopment is imperative, from a pedagogical point of view, for two reasons. First, thermodynamics has successfully described a large part of macroscopic experience, which is the concern of statistical mechanics. It has done so not on the basis of molecular dynamics but on the basis of a few simple and intuitive postulates stated in everyday terms. If we first falimiarize ourselves with thermodynamics, the task of statistical mechanics reduces to the explanation of thermodynamics. Second, the classical kinetic theory of gases is the only known special case in which thermodynics can be derived nearly from first principles, ie, molecular dynamics. A study of this special case will help us to understand why statstical mecahnics sorks.'

Reynolds, Vernon, and Ralph Tanner, The Social Ecology of Religion, Oxford University Press 1995 Jacket: 'No society exists in which religion does not play a significant part in the lives of ordinary people. Yet the functions of the world's diverse religions have never been fully described and analyzed, nor has the impact of adherence to those religions on the health and survival of the populations that practice them. . . . this extraordinary text reveals how religions in all parts of the world meet the needs of ordinary people and frequently play an important part in helping them to manage their affairs.'

West, Morris, The Ringmaster, HarperCollins Publishers 1996 Amazon Customer review… 'A man can be an idiot in as many languages he can speak. But polyglot Langton is no idiot - just unlucky to get caught between several mighty antagonists, striving to save a country and make a huge profit as well. The stake is the contract to supply large areas of Russia with essentials. Of course, Langton the interpreter and chair of the conference stands deep in the mud, and of course the situation does not get any easier for his affair with the beautiful, but elusive expert Martha. The picture of men representing different kinds of power - financial, political and the Japanese Mafia - is believable and chilling. One feels the strain on Langton when he muddles through as well as he can, playing chess on an unstable board and waiting for the earthquake. Another thriller - quite Western, and charming in its exploration of Japanese culture and the mystery of languages. Worth reading for that - and the plot is not bad, either.'Morten Holmboe
