POLITICAL HYDRAULICS

CONSERVED FLOW
CREATIVE/ANNIHILATIVE FLOW

Conserved flow holds for the lifetime of particles but is broken at creation and annihilation, although energy/momentum/action are conserved.

We make action a unit, ie the dimensionless quantity. It is also customary to make the velocity of light 1. Then rate of action breaks into spatial rate of action (momentum) and temporal rate of action (energy). Act is scale invariant and each act counts as 1 [in its peer group]. The smallest act has the physical dimension (meaning) of the quantum of action. This quantum is a logical (ordered) rather than arithmetical (cardinal) entity.

We may think of quantum mechanics as traffic analysis in a network. All the mathematical machinery of quantum mechanics works to two purposes. First it enables us to define a vast number of

[page 53]

'stationary states' in the Universe, like the electronic states of a hydrogen atom. And second, we can use quantum mechanics to work out the probability that one state will change into another. The probability, for instance, that an alpha particle inside a uranium atom will be found outside the uranium atom. We imagine each atomic event at the quantum level to represent one quantum of action. The meaning associated with this quantum of action may be of transfinite complexity, it all depends on the system of which the event in question is an atomic part. [nor is there any reason why a given event may not be part of many systems].

ATOM = EVENT = bounded in space and time. An event has a beginning and an end, be it an atomic decay or a circus.

The new trinity: capitalism (LOGOS), democracy (SPIRIT), socialism (FATHER).

Authoritarian vs dynamic.

the creative flow is based on a conserved flow. How do capitalism, socialism and democracy fit together?

Capital is the incarnate word.

Socialism is unity in action, ie Father.

Democracy is the creative force, permutation = Holy Spirit.

Longest day. . . .

General relativity describes the overall structure of the network. Quantum mechanics describes the behaviour of sources in detail, giving us an explanation for the traffic observed by general relativity.

Evolution

The key to survival is ingenuity; we take this statement as a definition of ingenuity: the ability to achieve an end despite the dense field of errors surrounding the straight, or straightish, road.

One approach to quantum field theory is through the path integral method due to Feynman. Feynman Although the formalism is tricky, and often not the simplest, . . . there

[page 55]

is deep insight in this view, explained so beautifully in QED. Feynman 1 Things go best when everything is in phase. To be in phase is to make the action integral stationary and so minimize the action. Let us rephrase the path integral calculation in logical terms., taking 'closeness in phase' to mean 'closeness to consistency'. In binary logic we have in phase and out of phase = not-in phase. In the probabilistic logic of superpositions of states, phase may become 'continuous' as a probability amplitude described by a complex exponential. Complex phase is a two dimensional object, and so can be 'superdense coded' by taking advantage of these two degrees of freedom.

INGENUITY = ERROR PREVENTION = CAPITALIZATION = MAKING WORDS (scenarios for survival, ie the next meal, the next war) flesh = DOING IT.

In the last millennia we have become conscious of many features of ourselves and our role on the planet. This role has become significant since our unbridled ingenuity is leading us to divert more and more of the world's resources to ourselves, to the detriment of their previous users.

Our ingenuity has two principal directions: finding things; and having found the, capturing them for our own use. This general algorithm applies equally to coal and to thermodynamics, as to all other resources and formally expressed programs for action.

NP Nondeterministic polynomial. The nondeterministic computer comes up with answers in its own way. The simplest way is to be massively parallel so that there is one processor to check every possible answer and a mechanism for signalling bingo when one of the possibilities (permutations) turn out to be a solution.

The first draft of the masterpiece is done. Physical Theology 2006 Will mean anything to anybody else? Perhaps we . . . some intriguing results in quantum field theory would do the job, as if I would ever get them. But I remain a legend in my own mind, and I have plenty of energy to go on, so why not. . . .

Feynman, Richard P , and Albert P Hibbs, Quantum Mechanics and Path Integrals, McGraw Hill 1965 Preface: 'The fundamental physical and mathematical concepts which underlie the path integral approach were first developed by R P Feynman in the course of his graduate studies at Princeton, ... . These early inquiries were involved with the problem of the infinte self-energy of the electron. In working on that problem, a "least action" principle was discovered [which] could deal succesfully with the infinity arising in the application of classical electrodynamics.' As described in this book. Feynam, inspired by Dirac, went on the develop this insight into a fruitful source of solutions to many quantum mechanical problems.

Feynman, Richard, QED: The Strange Story of Light and Matter, Princeton UP 1988 Jacket: 'Quantum electrodynamics - or QED for short - is the 'strange theory' that explains how light and electrons interact. Thanks to Richard Feynmann and his colleagues, it is also one of the rare parts of physics that is known for sure, a theory that has stood the test of time. ... In this beautifully lucid set of lectures he provides a definitive introduction to QED.'

Le Carre, John, The Russia House, Knopf; 0394577892 1989 Amazon Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly 'The master of the spy novel has discovered perestroika , and the genre may never be the same again . Le Carre's latest is both brilliantly up-to-date and cheeringly hopeful in a way readers of the Smiley books could never have anticipated. Barley Blair is a down-at-heels, jazz-loving London publisher who impresses a dissident Soviet physicist during a drunken evening at a Moscow Book Fair. When the physicist attempts to have Barley publish his insider's study of the chaotic state of Soviet defense, British intelligence steps in. Barley, after extensive vetting by both MI5 and the CIA, is made the go-between for further invaluable information, and in the process becomes involved with the physicist's former lover, Katya. The portraits of American and British intelligence agents are, as always, wonderfully acute, and the plot is a dazzling creation. Le Carre's Russia is funny and touching by turns but always convincing, and the love affair between Barley and Katya, subtly understated, is by far the warmest the author has created. But the singing quality of The Russia House , written at the height of le Carre's powers, is its pervading sense of the increasing waste and irrelevance of ongoing cold-war machinations: "That is . . the tragedy of great nations. So much talent bursting to be used, so much goodness longing to come out. Yet all so miserably spoken for that sometimes we could scarcely believe it was America speaking to us at all."
