We are modelling the Universe as a communication network. Practical finite computer networks are controlled by layered protocols each of which provides an alphabet of operations to be used by the layer above it. The lowest layer is the hardware, the highest, the network user. Tanenbaum Each pair of layers has the relationship hardware : user to one another.

Quantum mechanics operates first in complex time and then, like all layers of the protocol, persists into more complex layers involving space and [more complex systems].

[page 32]

One dimensional --> countable dimensions

So we say quantum mechanics as energy operates in a Hilbert space of countable dimensions each of which represents a different frequency or photon. The thing is described by the harmonic oscillator, with creation and annihilation operators and spin 0 Bose particles.

Quantum mechanics deals with message free (that is meaningless) traffic. Meaning does not come until we create space.

Entropy increases by braiding, but probability remains normalized.

Space [as opposed to time] does not need to exist for quantum mechanics to work. All we require is a Hilbert space of suitable dimension, any number will do. The constraint imposed by communication theory will reduce this to a countable number of dimensions. At this level of complexity particles are differentiated by frequency or energy alone in a range of ℵ0 frequencies from 1 to ℵ0.

Feynman III 4-1 Feynman Insofar as particles are identical they interfere [communicate using the same protocol] with one another. Let us assume that in the quantum mechanical layer we have only Bose particles. This assumption is justified because we have not introduced the protocol required to account for coding delay which comes at the special relativistic layer which contains, via Dirac's equation, the electron and positron, the Fermi particles. What about neutrinos which appear to be mates of electrons. This layer has the first signs of space, but maybe only one dimensional for a total of 2D defined by Time and Spin 1/2. Fermions need [create] space!

Spin 1 = 3D
Spin 2 = 5D = complex time (action) + real time + 3 x space?

Einstein Relativity page 126: 'The great power possessed by the general principle of relativity lies in the comprehensive limitation which is imposed on the laws of nature in consequence of what we have seen above.

Although Einstein has liberated us from coordinate systems, Gaussian coordinates still rely on the classical idea of continuity by proximity. The next step in the liberation of the Universe is to replace Gaussian continuity with logical continuity, thereby freeing the Universe to occupy any point in the logical Universe, much bigger than the continuous Universe.

On the reference Mollusc: Einstein The only points of interest in physics are the points of contact, when the coordinates of two points on two lines are the same. We might see these as points of communication. A network is its own reference frames, nodes communicating provide reference and context for eachother.

An act = act of communication is a duplex thing - I write, you read; then you [write] and I [read]

[page 34]

From a quantum mechanical point of view we might write <you read | I write > = < I read | you write I>*

along the lines of Hij = H ji*

Quantum mechanics works purely in the action/time domain where there is no memory. We need space for memory.

We make a reversible Turing machine by running two in parallel, the second undoing what the first one does to that the net result is 0, even though both of them might perform a calculation.

Energy = rate of change of amplitude, which does not necessarily change probability until we have 'interference of amplitudes'. How long has it taken me to see this clearly?

Sum over i < x | i >< i | y > = < x | y >

'This is our fundamental law Feynman III 5-1

The Universe is a complete set of basis states but it has structure because we find different elements of the basis in different places.

The older deeper mystery of quantum mechanics is the relationship between quantum states and spacetime.

Perturbation theory is a network. Each message transmitted and received by a node perturbs that node.

Veltman page xi: 'Perturbation theory means Feynman diagrams.

page xii: 'Feynman rules have a true physical content, and the physicists must understand that. He/he must know how Lorentz invariance, conservation of probability, renormalizability reflect themselves in the Feynman rules. In other words even if there is no rigorous foundation for these rules, the physical principles at stake must be understood.'

A partile at rest has four momentum (0, 0, 0, iM )

No physics in the metric? Not in its actual definition, but certainly in its structure, on not-x and three x's.

Christianity (and its predecessors and collateral lines) is largely a product of intellectual efforts to deal with the reality of death. It represents the general tendency to avoid this reality by postulating eternal life. Religious entrepreneurs (like Saul/Paul of Tarsus) seized on this hypothesis as a means of political control and built a wealthy and powerful institution which is corrupt and dangerous insofar as it embodies unnatural power derived from a false picture of reality. Murphy-O'Connor God is in effect the mother of all reference frames. Following the program developed in relativity, quantum mechanics and field theory, we do away with the absolute reference frames and introduce the idea of general reference

[page 36]

frames by saying that any continuous [Gaussian] reference frame will do. Einstein Now the essential nature of a reference frame is that it is a formal or abstract structure which we use to measure the real situation. The network theory takes the next step, which is to say that two communicating entities are both (real) embodied reference frames, that is the Universe is its own reference frame and we can abandon the god frame and the hypothesis of eternal life. The quantum (digital) view of the Universe tells us that the process is a matter of signalling in four space and it is essential to the nature of a signal that it be distinct from other signals. Each time a 0 bit is overwritten by a 1 bit we can say that the zero is annihilated and the 1 created. Since this process is scale invariant the creation and annihilation of a message can be mapped to my birth and death.

How do we explain the statistical structure built on amplitudes in computing, communication terms? We can express it in complex numbers by saying that the null reply to i is i*, and that the possibility [probability] of this bit of conversation is the product of the joint probability of i and i*, ie | i |2.

Broadly, we hypothesize that the evolution of the Universe parallels the evolution of numbers which begins with units like sheep and stones and culminates in transfinite ordered sets which their inventor maintains are sufficiently complex and structured to represent anything representable. Cantor The transfinite network is a dynamic version of Cantors numbers, transforming between then by the operation of Turing machines, ie computers.

While it is easy to see how natural numbers map to sheep, the mapping of the transfinite network onto the Universe is a little more problematic, and we will do it in stages, matching constraints in the network with constraints in the world, the first being quantization, that is creation and annihilation [boundedness in time].

A form has no energy and so its frequency is zero, ie it is outside time and so not observable. We only see forms that are realized (created, occupied) by energy.

Energy (realization) can only accrue to those forms which are consistent with their environment, that is their past light cone.

The 'continuous hypothesis' holds in physics because all physical calculations are unary, there is no place value in the notation so that things add up by a simple count, as measure theory assumes the continuum to do.

When we are writing the roles of the letters of the alphabet are not defined within themselves but in the wider contexts of words, sentences, books, languages, cultures and ultimately the whole Universe. This is not the case for the physically realized letters of

the universal alphabet, which exist without context, the most fundamental alphabet being that used for communication in the initial singularity. On the hypothesis that the formal growth the of Universe parallels the growth of mathematics (as rendered for instance) in set theory. Beginning with the empty set, we come in quantum mechanics to function theory and Cantor's ordered sets Here we render this structure dynamic by imagining it formally as a network of Turing machines or more generally, computers. From this model we hope to explain the layered evolution and structure of the Universe in the language of communication rather than in the language of interacting mass points pioneered by Galileo and Newton.

The 'known' points in a Gaussian coordinate system are the points of contact, ie the points with the same coordinates in the same system.

nothing specific to do with the human intellect, as the scholastics (and humanist quantum mechanics) maintain.

The formal statement 'energy is conserved' has no energy because it is always true. Or we could say that it does have energy (measured by the frequency of the relevant amplitudes) but that its probability is always one.

Information, that is for reproducing organisms, 'sexual'.

An essential component of the ascetic point of view is that all activity should be business and life a continual striving toward some goal of profit. This is to obscure the importance of the pleasure side of life, which takes on a pejorative connotation in a zone where business is the religion. This I think is . . . my key personal experience in the transition from catholicism to nature: the catholicism being dogmatic, is finite and has no place for infinite growth. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, 'per saecula saeculorum' (through ages of ages) Amen. Glory be to the Father - Wikipedia The general tendency of such deterministic ('right wing') organisations is the suppression of creativity. We must judge the freedom of a society by the amount of harmless diversity or eccentricity it supports. In physical terms, this is a measure of the temperature: the cooler the system, the more quantum states are distinguishable. [?]

In our society we spend more time talking about the pain barrier than the pleasure barrier.

Murphy-O'Connor, Jerome, Paul: A Critical Life, Oxford University Press, USA 1998 Amazon editorial review: From Library Journal Murphy-O'Connor, a professor of New Testament studies who teaches in Jerusalem, has written an important scholarly biography of Paul based on an extensive analysis of his letters rather than on Luke's Acts of the Apostles, as is traditionally done. The first chapter of the book, "The Chronological Framework," compares evidence from the Pauline corpus with that of Luke's Acts and extant extrabiblical archaeological evidence, enabling Murphy-O'Connor to postulate a more precisely delimited chronology for Paul's entire life than does Gunther Bornkamm's Paul (1971). The remaining 13 chapters, based on information extracted from the authentic Pauline letters, discuss in more detail specific events in Paul's life. One problem with this methodology is that of pure speculation due to the nature of the sources and the occasional lack of confirming extra-biblical evidence. In addition to Paul's biography, Murphy-O'Connor also treats the development in Paul's theological thought.
