Exponential vs linear seems to be the heart of the matter. Anything growing exponentially no matter how small it starts, will outgrow anything growling linearly, no matter how large it starts.

The growth of solar energy will follow something like the logistic curve, flattening out at total penetration in say 100 years time.

One feature of the transfinite network is that its finite local areas obey the no-cloning idea. One of the problems with writing is that it encourages the idea that there are an infinite number of each letter, all formally identical. This is abstract, but in the real world every letter is unique, this 'a' is not that 'a'. For them all to be different they must be formally

[page 93]

different. Space-time gives every letter a distinct address in the physical layer and in higher layers, such that in which this writing is a decodable message, the physically distinct letters are given a further formal distinction by the role they play in the overall discourse. The distinction is local, especially in a book like this that leaps from topic to topic as things occur to me when a notebook is within reasonable reach. Of course the more interesting an idea seems to me to be the further I will look for the book and the pen to record it. We can talk of physical addressing and logical addressing and note that n memory locations can be occupied logically in n! ways.

We may think of the basis states of a Hilbert space as [discrete, orthogonal] memory addresses, and the amplitudes attributed to each state as the contents of the addresses. These amplitudes are subject to normalization and so they are in some way coupled by the axioms of probability. The no-cloning idea required some concepts of unity, in the sense that we cannot find two of the same things in the one locality because they are all by definition different. We speak of degeneracy but this is in a way another error of abstraction [like Lonergan's 'empirical residue'], as though the elements of the degeneration are really different whereas the reality of degeneracy is that a degenerate set of states is one state. Lonergan

We represent a physical state by a vector or function [a point] in a complex Hilbert space. This state is not observable as a whole but we can sample it by measurement and given enough samples construct a real probability distribution function which correlates through the Born interpretation with the state vectors and the mathematical machinery of quantum mechanics. Interpretation of quantum mechanics - Wikipedia

[page 93]

All this works marvellously, and we would expect a reasonable theory of evolution to explain why. Why are the probabilities of events coupled through the quantum mechanical formalism? We want a real explanation of this in terms of some concrete mechanism that has the periodic features exhibited by quantum mechanics.

The root charge against the Roman Catholic Church is that it is selfish. On the other hand, selfishness is closely correlated with survival, so we have to distinguish and say that the Church is unreasonably selfish, and the root of this lies in the classification of people into the faithful and the infidels, the good and the bad. Although it claims to be universal, the Church is exclusive. Any reasonable human religion must automatically include all people, as the free secular religion based on a good formal expression of human rights does. United Nations Nationalism mimics the exclusivity of the Church.

We see this error in the Olympic movement which emphasizes the nationality of competitors and national medal tallies without seeing that the competitors are above all human individuals and patriotic bullshit is irrelevant.

The transfinite network is a perfectly definite and sharply defined formal structure which stands as the endpoint (omega) of universal evolution. The dynamics of the world lies between the initial singularity and the transfinite endpoint.

Probabilities belong to forms, and we compute the probabilities of different forms (like the Gaussian etc) from the probabilities of their parts, which calculation in quantum mechanics is represented by the inner product, the sum of [products of amplitudes]. Complete compatibility ('the norm') has a probability of 1. Nothing in common (orthogonality) brings the probability of being decoded alike to zero. We can only make sense of probabilities in terms of communication, codes and ordered sets. What is the probability that this key (a vector of independent little teeth) will fit this lock (a vector of detents). On the Turing machine model the randomness of the output is a product of the randomness of the input, the machine itself being deterministic [like quantum mechanical calculations, which operate in the realm of probability density functions].

Classical mechanics is based on deterministic process, although no explanation if given for that process. Network mechanics is based on the logical functions, which are deterministic and so cyclic: not not p = p, not something else like q. If we see that not not p does equal q, we need to look for some deeper complexity (deeper = prior to, a potential cause of).

LOGICAL PRIORITY = TEMPORAL PRIORITY in the execution of a local (self-consistent) process.

LOCAL = SELF-CONSISTENT. So we see quantum non-locality (consistency over a distance) as a logical rather than a space-time ('contact') phenomenon. fides quaerens intellectum: how I feel about you is

[page 96]

part of my evidence for the proposition 'the Universe is divine'. We all feel about one another as Gods (orthogonal processes) feel about one another as a result of communication which breaks the orthogonality by introducing a new [non-orthogonal] angle.

Can two non-zero complex numbers be orthogonal, ie z1z = 0, z1, z not-= 0

Thompson Agatha Christie page 119: 'Agatha did not say "I". . . . Perhaps no writer learns to say I; perhaps if they did they would no longer be writers.' Thompson

To be a writer is to occupy the layer above the material you are writing with.

Fantasy world vs real world. The aim of science is to class the fantasies into two classes 'consistent with reality' and inconsistent with reality. Hilbert space is the space of fantasies and to map it to the network space we have to understand how fantasy works, by unguided permutation (unconstrained permutation) [a fixed set of symbols with no intrinsic ordering]

Fantasy, imagination,myth, hypothesis . . .

'She's not you, my precious.' A legend in my own mind.

Having allied the trinity to the structure of the worl, I am now being drawn back to the ancient and medieval psychology I learnt in my youth, the intellect picking intelligible form out of the possibilities

[page 97]

presented by imagination.

INTELLIGIBLE = CLOSED (CYCLIC, PERIODIC). Here seems to be the reason for complex arithmetic in quantum mechanics.

So fantasy - complex aristhmetic; reality - real arithmetic. Like a monjkey in the jungle swinging from branch to branch exploring the space and simulaneously looking for a way home.

Parent couples to child through shared code development during the creation of the child. This statement can be construed as true both in life and in programming.

Thompson page 122: 'But Agatha did not need a perfect child. She herself was perfect to Clara [her mother]. And so in love was she with being a daughter ('A daughter's a daughter all your life . . . ') that she was unable to find true fulfillment as a mother. Just as Clara had reacted to being given away as a child by becoming a possessive powerful force in the lives of Agatha and Madge [Agatha's sister], so Agatha reacted to all that maternal love by detaching herself from her own daughter. Could she ever have conjured again the close perfection of her relationship with Clara? Would she have wanted to? Rosalind's independent spirit, her reluctance to be hugged, he disdain for imaginative play, were almost a relief to Agatha. They removed the obligation to try to replicate the bond between herself and Clara, which would have been impossible anyway. Instead, Agatha could view Rosalind with an affectionate distance, telling herself that there were simply unalike. And as Rosalind's self sufficiency developed, so too did Agatha's objectivity. . . . '

All this is an internal complexification of the function y = not-x.

[page 98]

The Cantor symmetry tends to justify the application of psychology to the elucidation of physics. We talk about abstract forms and transformations, which are the static (remembered) communicable elements of the ineffable dynamic process.

Hilbert space mimics the universal unconscious. Reality appears through the veil that separates unconscious from conscious. In our minds, the unconscious is operated by a neural network which gives weight to the network picture (more faith). How does this work at the level of zero complexity? Neurons that were once independent become coupled and ultimately generate a conscious image (= feeling etc).

The origin of entanglement is in some sense genetic: the children are partly logically confined by the parents.

MEMORY gives new degrees of freedom to TIMING.

FLUCTUATION = NOTHING ie the absence of control [intelligibility].

Wednesday 25 November 2009

Reflective self-consciousness relies for its existence on memory and a sense of time ordering into before and after which leads to feelings and speculations about the future, hopes and fears, which feed back into the interpretations of consciousness and lead to the existence of self-sustaining feedback loops of faith that serve

[page 99]

to create a public mental safe space (Heaven, haven) for people to occupy and which serves as the environment for cooperation and survival. Because it is bigger than any one of us, this 'noetic space' (= religion) is hard to see. The Cantor symmetry gives a clue to it because it shows us that formalisms that we do not understand have some features in common with formalisms we can understand.

The Cantor symmetry shows is that it is possible to make the unconscious conscious. The infinite definite.

One might speculate that the foundations of epistemology lie in consciousness of uncertainty.

The evolutionary paradigm (gradual creation, infinite to definite) provides reasonable explanations for the guiding probability density functions in our lives.

INFINITE = RANDOM
FINITE = CONTROLLED

Control by selection is control by failure of the unfit.

'He had been a good officer but this particular case [lost Agatha] had done for him. Five years later he retired from the force. He died, aged fifty-six, in 1932.' Thompson page 255.

Life and death are closely connected to one's role in society.

PERSON / ROLE

A person is an independent entity which may be constrained by a role constructed by the larger society: whore, banker etc.

The task of intelligence (immunity, the maintenance of stability) is to overcome error, that is any formal arrangement that degrades the performance of the system. Networks resist error because they carry many copies of every form and transmit them using error resistant protocols.

The nature of 'marriage' and the roles it imposes on people are all social constructs varying widely in time and space but, insofar as they have survived, adapted to the realities of life for each culture.

Thompson 263: 'After her divorce Agatha never again took communion in Church. Always she felt shame and guilt, especially toward her daughter, for having 'given in' to Archie's demands for a divorce.' Religion.

So many people are doomed by rigid and uncompliant social norms based on theories that we are some

[page 101]

sort of fallen angel.

The no cloning theorem says that clones will never meet, so that they will not know that they are clones. In its current form, this theorem is a logical consequence of quantum mechanics, but is it true in the physical sense?

T page 272 'A man should have knowledge of himself and belief in God.'

Thompson page 379: Murder is the result of excessive rigidity in the system.

page 378: '"He wanted everything, his home, his children, his respectability and Elsie. And the price he would pay for that was murder." So says Miss Marple in The Moving Finger, in a passage that might well be called the sacred text of English murder.'

'God' is the creator and annihilator.

Murder: this space is not big enough for both of us.

From searching the infinite to knowing something finite, this is the creative transition. Given an alphabet there are an infinity of strings only a subset of measure zero of which are (in any given code environment) meaningful sentences.

Recapitalization: we think of it in terms of money but the essential ingredient of recapitalization (what attracts the money) is the reform of the business model that lead to the need for recapitalization, since the fact that an enterprize becomes insolvent suggests that the management was not sufficiently prudent to deal with the vagaries of reality even though the underlying idea ('invest in essential infrastructure' BBI) was and remains sound. Prime Infrastructure

The most essential infrastructure in any community is its religion, its provision for dealing with the invisible and unforeseen aspects of life by increasing error resistance by encoding people into larger and larger 'packets'.

Thompson page 471: '. . . in her old age [Agatha] saw a link between the naivety of the modern world -- its politicized belief in the perfectibility of human beings [applied Christianity?] -- and its love of ideology, anarchy and violence.'

As if these three (Anglicanism and the destruction of other cultures) were not the foundation of Empire.

Maybe natural selection has magnified the effect

[page 103]

of the more democratic and understanding imperialists. We may disparage them, but probably most were living according to their inherited lights. The public persona of a group is revealed by its writing (in the broadest sense, ie 'fruits') of which the works of Agatha Christie seem to occupy a disproportionate space in my mind. The probability of this happening is partly explained by Thompson's book.

Business as usual hovers near the zero of creativity, whereas big 'paradigm changes' like the emergence of agriculture and heat engines tend to 1.

The biggest material development in human history will be our learned ability to live directly off the sun as plants have done, and so take the burden of the human race of the plant world and enable us to increase the stability of our world by diversification of our energy supply and the removal of many of the spanners (pollutants) we currently throw into the global works.

TRANSFINITE NETWORK = GLOBAL WORKS

Here the equality sign indicates an isomorphism. The simplest, zero entropy, form of isomorphism is signified by the usual meaning of equality, cardinal equivalence, 1 + 1 = 2.

<>p> Possibility lies in the permutation of actual states or configurations, ie changing configuration, as in chemical transformations of the alphabet of elements.

The foolproofness of the world is a product of natural selection. Truly foolish actions tend not to reproduce themselves. [This is the evolutionary tautology]

All desire is for new space, new states, new entropy, new information.

We construct a soup of processes and let them evolve. [to bond is to communicate]

A nand gate takes two inputs and gives a single output. A decision (if, then) takes one input at a time and can produce two or more different outputs. The minimum chain of nots is 2, but we may construct longer chains with even numbers of gates. But how do we decide that one gate is not the other? An oscillator is a single not gate reading its own output.

Creation and annihilation from before to after. Aristotle and his followers imagined that the common element to before and after was in effect within the before and after states and called it matter. Here we think that the commonality may not be all inside the place of change, but outside it in the form of the environment in which the change takes place. What we might call the Local Deity.

Pure creation is unpredictable since there is nothing before the creation upon which to base a prediction. On the other hand, annihilation may be predictable since we can collect data from the system to be annihilated.

Constrained creation is the work of a Turing machine where the result, if it comes, is fully determined by the initial condition (design, software, data) of the machine.

The transfinite network is the mathematical formal construct of unlimited resolution. All the natural numbers are resolved in this system. Conversely, the cardinal of the actual set of natural numbers represented in a given locality is a measure of the

[page 106]

resolution. Given this resolution and adequate memory [also a function of resolution] a system can make the transfinjite transition from 0 to 1, where 0 may (at the given level of resolution) [be] 2, 3, 4, . . . n . . . We will generally content ourselves with studying in a 2 state system, where 0 = 2 (from our superior point of view).

I write things in a panic, a passion, and later can sit back and look at them cooly. The whole project is basically the cooling and complexification [of my initial ideas]

Mapping the transfinite network to the 'outcome space' of quantum mechanics, the observed observables which generally appear as probability functions of energy. In spectral lines we see the spectrum of repetition rate (execution rate) of certain [processes, transitions].

Climate modelling: the planet has personality, and as in any personality, there are certain predictable elements in their output and certain unpredictable. As with quantum mechanics, we can to some extent predict probabilities, but not events. He is irascible does not tell you exactly where he is going to go off.

There are many people on earth today (ie many pairs of people) with incompatible noetic software.

Adams, Marilyn McCord, Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God, Melbourne University Press 1999 Jacket: 'Thinkers in all societies have struggled to make sense of horrendous evil. This provocative book takes a religious perspective. It tackles a fundamental dilemma in Christian thought -- how to recocile faith in God with the evils that afflict human beings. Distinguished Americal philosopher Marilyn McCord Adams argues that analytic philosophy of religion is too narrowly focussed. The ground rules for debate have allowed philosophers to avert their gaze from the very worst evils and from their impact on human lives. She proposes a radical shift away from the preoccupation with morals and towards more fruitful evaluative categories such as purity, defilement, honour, shame and aesthetics. The innovative approach of Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God will challenge thinkers both religious and secular.'

Thompson, Laura, Agatha Chriastie: An English Mystery, Headline Book Publishing 2009 Amazon Product Description 'A passionate and accomplished writer, Laura Thompson now turns her highly acclaimed biographical skills to Agatha Christie—arguably the greatest crime writer in the world. Thompson describes the Edwardian world in which Christie grew up; explores the relationships she had, including those with her two husbands and daughter; and investigates the mysteries still surrounding Christie's life—including her disappearance in 1926. For the first time, Christie’s six Mary Westmacott romance novels—written under a pseudonym and highly revelatory about her hidden inner life—are fully studied in a biography. Agatha Christie is a mystery and writing about her is a detection job in itself. But, with access to all of Christie's letters, papers, and writing notebooks, as well as interviews with her grandson, daughter, son-in-law, and their living relations, Thompson is able to unravel not only the detailed workings of Christies detective fiction, but the truth behind her private life as well.'
