Its a digital world, but how do the digits interact? In a computer we do it with electrodynamics, the physical process behind the formal process that we observe and use [shapes (forms) in spacetime] We find it comfortable to think of the electrodynamic process (or any other process that we use to implement digital logic) as a continuous process, but in fact this also is digital but we can

[page 21]

imagine a continuous process (evolution of wave function) which determines the probabilities of the digital outcomes, rather than accepting that the digital outcomes are capable of interacting without a continuous matrix [but remember that true continuity is nothing]. Here we are searching for forms of words (digital strings) which make the digital world intelligible.

Value flows in units of action.

The old question: what is the hardware of the Universe, ie the fixed system which guides its action. Answer, the fixed point of the divine dynamics, beginning with the 'omnino simplex' classical God.

To know a network is to know all the different ways of getting from a to b and their costs in terms of distance, time, fuel, etc, like a taxi driver. In quantum mechanics this data is encoded in the Hamiltonian and the whole business is an illustration of Feynman's idea that there are [a] large number of different ways to derived the fixed equations of quantum mechanics and their meanings.

The motion of a swing is pretty much the same (a pendulum) whether the swinging weight is a rick or a living child, an example of the symmetry of mass-energy.

The motivation to undertake a project grows as models of the project become more precise and predict a positive outcome. The critical step in this process is the decision to declare the project 'bankable', a sufficiently low probability of loss to encourage investment. One sees in modern times companies like Snapchat which have no (or negligible) revenue, which are nevertheless assigned a very high capital value. Institutional Venture Partners

[page 22]

It is hard to be certain what the investors are paying for. A properly developed theology and religion (the 'app') might justify similar attractions of capital.

Christianity denies the reality of death even though it is an ubiquitous phenomenon happening to everything from fundamental particles to stars and perhaps galaxies, a span that includes ourselves and the solar system that sustains us. By denying death, Christianity also effectively denies that the Universe is creative, breathing new life into the remains of the old in a very old cycle which will continue [for Earth] until the Sun becomes impossible to live with.

Good mathematics is bankable, like effective software.

LOCAL = DETERMINISTIC (one computer)
GLOBAL = DYNAMIC (branching, increasing entropy [second order differential equations?])

Doubt. Earlier in the year I would wake up in the morning filled with optimism derived from the progress I felt I was making. Now I wake up filled with doubt that I have bitten off more than I can chew. The core of the problem seems to be in the mathematics of continuity and the contention that from an algorithmic information point of view the mathematical continuum is nothing and that arguments from continuity are in effect arguments from the via negativa. While it seems reasonable to contend that Universe is divine, this view of continuity seems to fly in the face of too much mathematical history. The logic seems sound, however, that our mathematical treatment of continuity introduces digitization via the 'back door' and so does

[page 23]

not really deal with true non-digital continuity, about which there is nothing to be said, as Cohen's work suggests. This view is supported (I think) by Noether's theorem. Time to bite the bullet and write 'reasonable effectiveness'. Cohen, Neuenschwander

Zurek on quantum jumps: what is necessary to make an observation is that both the observer and the observed have the same basis. Given that any basis may be brought into congruence with any other by rotation in a space with the same dimension of the bases, this is ultimately a matter of phase change until the phases of observer and observed are coincident . . . orthogonal bases.

Bonding requires duplicity: a loves b and b loves a.

Behind the enormous complexity of the Universe is the simple concepts of conserved flow, like water flowing in leak free pipes. The basic flow in the Universe is the flow of energy which we understand mathematically as the flow of probability [frequency]. We like to manipulate the flows of probability, bringing the accident rate down and successful outcomes [journeys] up.

The aim of control is to control the flow of probability [frequency of events] concentrating on desirable outcomes and doing as much as reasonably possible to avoid undesirable outcomes in proportion to their undesirability, ie public health. All social issues are public health issues. We must include all sources of death and disability, preemptively as well as curatively.

[page 24]

Communication is a flow of probability, the entropy of the channel determining how much control can be transmitted, ie information, the dual of entropy (general covariance, the metric being a natural number).

Probability is a ratio of actions. Fair coin gives 1:1 :: heads:tails.

Dirac's transformation theory operates at constant entropy, constant relationship between energy flow and information flow, whose structure is irrelevant to the transmitting hardware. No sequence of bits is taboo.

The power of the set concept is its symmetry with respect to cardinal number, All sets are the same, no matter how many elements they contain, from 0 to the alephs.

We save the world not by pain and suffering but by inventing new algorithms to improve our productivity in terms of pleasure per unit effort.

What we need to avoid is false economy.

We don't give a fuck about the facts, man, we just do what we like [Bush, Abbott]

Catholic church an absolute authority enshrouded in total mystery. The Church's business plan is simple. It has convinced large numbers of people that it holds an infallible monopoly on communication with God. It has also convinced them that it is essential for them to listen to the Word of God preached by the Church and obey it if they are to avoid an eternity of agony in Hell and enjoy an eternity of bliss in Heaven. Both these convictions are false and once their falsity is accepted, a radical reform of Catholic theology becomes necessary. Once we accept that the Universe is divine and all experience is experience of God, theology can become an evidence based science. God is our judge; if we pursue wrong policies we are likely to be punished by the failure of our work, and the consequent loss. Do not listen to the Church; listen to the World. This seems to be what Francis is doing and one can see that the time for a theological paradigm change becomes nigh.

On my relationship to God. Standing in the sun digging the foundations for an amenities block, I think that I am never closer to my God than when I am digging.

The whole concept of enemies and the right to bug, torture and murder enemies is gradually falling out of date before the realization that we are all one interrelated species trying

[page 25]

to survive in a complex planetary environment.

How do entanglement and 'spooky action at a distance' fit the digital world? Entanglement is a form of communication or coupling first outlined in the Einstein Podolsky Rosen experiment. It is non-local, suggesting that it exists at a fundamental level where space has not yet emerged. The layered network model supposes that any process at any level entrains processes right down to the initial singularity. Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen

If it is too good to be true it probably isn't. This sums up my fears for natural theology. But I have to face it. How else can we understand a Universe intelligent enough to create Earth and all who inhabit it?

The power of love. How far am I prepared to go outside my comfort zone (deviate from my generalized geodesic) to accomodate a relationship. 0, couldn't care less; 1, I would sacrifice my life for this person. ≥ 2 on the genetic level of decision.

Dear Pope Francis, the Catholic history of salvation is in fact rubbish, as any well educated modern person like yourself must clearly see, Any attempt to reform the Church without bringing it into contact with reality is doomed to failure, maybe not in the short run, but definitely in the long run. The Church worships a false God with feet of clay which is bound to collapse eventually.

[page 27]

From a modern point of view, the sexual molestation of thousands of children and the centuries of cover up practised by the Church are trivial compared to perversion of billions of minds by the preachers of Catholic dogma.

Cohen, Paul J, Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis, Benjamin/Cummings 1966-1980 Preface: 'The notes that follow are based on a course given at Harvard University, Spring 1965. The main objective was to give the proof of the independence of the continuum hypothesis [from the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms for set theory with the axiom of choice included]. To keep the course as self contained as possible we included background materials in logic and axiomatic set theory as well as an account of Gödel's proof of the consistency of the continuum hypothesis. . . .'

Neuenschwander, Dwight E, Emmy Noether's Wonderful Theorem, Johns Hopkins University Press 2011 Jacket: A beautiful piece of mathematics, Noether's therem touches on every aspect of physics. Emmy Noether proved her theorem in 1915 and published it in 1918. This profound concept demonstrates the connection between conservation laws and symmetries. For instance, the theorem shows that a system invariant under translations of time, space or rotation will obey the laws of conservation of energy, linear momentum or angular momentum respectively. This exciting result offers a rich unifying principle for all of physics.'

Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen, Can the Quantum Mechanical Description of Physical Reality be Considered Complete??, A PDF of the classic paper. 'In a complete theory there is an element corresponding to each element of reality. A sufficient condition for the reality of a physical quantity is the possibility of predicting it with certainty, without disturbing the system. In quantum mechanics in the case of two physical quantities described by non-commuting operators, the knowledge of one precludes the knowledge of the other. Then either (1) the description of reality given by the wave function in quantum mechanics is not complete or (2) these two quantities cannot have simultaneous reality. Consideration of the problem of making predictions concerning a system on the basis of measurements made on another system that had previously interacted with it leads to the result that if (1) is false then (2) is also false, One is thus led to conclude that the description of reality given by the wave function is not complete.' back

Despite this fact, the financing was intensely competitive – one of the most competitive financings we have been a part of in years. So why did IVP choose to invest in Snapchat at this stage? The following ten reasons top our list: . . . 6. Follow the Smart Money – Snapchat’s early investors include Benchmark Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, two of the top venture capital firms in Silicon Valley. We’ve worked with both firms previously and can’t find enough good things to say about each. IVP co-invested in Twitter along side Benchmark in February 2009. That investment has proven to be one of the most successful in the history of our firm. We also co-invested with Benchmark in MySQL, which Sun Microsystems acquired in 2008 for $1 billion.' back
