[Notebook: DB 89 Cognitive Cosmogenesis]

[page 1]

Sunday 9 April 2023

Easter Sunday, the Biblical origin of the false Christian dream of immortality. Fear of hell and desire for Heaven moulded my youthful outlook and led me to become a member of a Catholic religious order in order to ensure my salvation. Now I know all this is the biggest scam ever perpetrated on humanity and have moulded the intellectual side of my career around a new conception of God and theology: the universe itself is divine and the evolutionary process has sculpted us in the image of this divinity. By becoming aware of the process by which evolution has enabled the construction of enormously complex entities out of simpler parts, we can learn how to make peace in the human population of the planet by becoming ourselves elements of a more complex and harmonious political entity.

All my ideas are published on the internet in real time and attract a small amount of traffic aggregating something of the order of 100 megabytes per month, a figure that has remained quite stable for about ten years without any systematic promotion. Now that my ideas are maturing, I can see the need to gather them up in

a consistent package which I call cognitve cosmogenesis which will be an upgrade and clarificaion of my current main work, cognitive cosmology, which is designed to produce the union of physics and theology implicit in the hypothesis that the universe is divine. The key to this union is that a comprehensive theory of everything stretching from fudamental particles to planetary civilization will be based on the psychological and cognitive sciences of logic, computation, communication and understanding or insight, the evolutionary construcion of new perspectives that characterize science and the development of the universe in general. The essence of it must retain the flavour of a theory of peace with the idea that creation saves and creation works fastest when entropy is maximized by the equality of the components of any system, in our case human equality as a subset of the equal values of all the systems that sustain us.

We've got to boil it down to one point. What is it? Action. The smallest and most perfect thing [the opposite in size of the traditional God]? The quantum of action. Instead we have become hooked on energy — quick action.

William Birthday

Energy is inverse time. Entropy is simply a count of states. The quantum of action is a logical operator [like a Turing machine]. The speed of light is determined by the need for quantum contact through spacetime via null geodesics.

The role of science is to delete delusions and replace them with truth.

Jackson Pollock: "Art is coming face to face with yourself ".

I can take some of the pressure off myself by thinking of my work as art rather than science and talking about the numbers from the mathematical remove, using the logic rather than the actual numbers, using a cognitive approach to mingle matter and spirit, going from god, through angels to the physical world. gravitation / Hilbert space / Minkowski space, kinematics to dynamics [formalism to causality].

It might be argued that the countably infinite "Turing vacuum" does not have sufficient entropy to model the continuum [of] ststes that are enivsaged by quantum field theory in the vacuum. The question revolves around the differences betwen the first and second transfinite numbers, 0 and 1. The difficulty with the transfinite vacuum envisaged by the quantum field theorists are overcome with renormalization. The renormalization process has been shown to apply to electrodynamics and the Yang Mills theory used in quantum chromodynamics. It has been counted as a plus for this theory that it accommodates both screening (to deal with the [theoretical] infinite self enery of zero sized electrons and positrons) and anti-screening which is the preferred explanation for asymptotic freedom and the confinement of quarks and gluons. These ideas are based on the applications of

[page 5]

statistics using the law of large numbers appled to very extensive Feyman diagrams to arrive at numerical results that appear to be quite close to observation. Insofar as there is a lot of flexibility available in renormalization to cut infinities down to size, these hopeful results may be the result of fortuitous choices. The Turing appoach, on the other hand, opens the way for a P vs NP approach to evolutionary selecion of alorithms that yield the world that we observe. It seems quite certain that given s spectrum of 0 halting Turing machines which could be arranged in networks analogous so Feyman diagrams, there is sufficient entropy in this approach to cover the problem. The beauty of the Turing / evolution / P vs NP approach is that it potentially yields definite algorithms to describe the structure of the universe and ad hocery like screening and anti-screening, and renormalization to deal with infinities which are, from a philosophical point of view meaningless, [can be avoided] since any meaningful reality must be a definite and separate object.

Introduction: Theology, good and evil, evolution. The fundamental problem for theology is how a god, billed as omniscient, omnipotent, loving snd benevolent towards humans allows the existence of the horrendous evils that we experience in our lives. Marilyn McCord Adams (1999): Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God

A standard answer is that god allows such evils because the are the occasion of greater goods. The most succinct statement of this idea is that God so

[page 6]

loved the world that they gave up their only beloved son, become human as Jesus of Nazareth, to be cruelly tortured to death by the Roman army occupying Palestine, because the result of this human sacrifice was to propitiate the Father for the insult delivered to them by humans [and so save the world from arbitrary damnation].

This explanation is obviously rubbish. The deck was stacked against humanity from the beginning. Our first parents were presumably pubescent teenagers full of romance and curiosity. God assigned the most intelligent of the angels, Lucifer, aka Satan to tempt them to disbedience, thus committing the original sin that led God to destroy the harmony of humanity and the world, making us all victims that God could blame for all their suffering. Of course God did not really do this. It is a story made up by the theologians working for the warlords who sought legitimacy for the horrendous evils they did to their fellow humans in order to maintain their hegemony.

The nature of God and the hidden nature of introspected psychological knowledge was radically revised by the invention of writing when it was realized that the articulation of speech had to be written in articulated symbolism, and

[page 7]

both were traced back to the mental word which introspectively feels like a structureless spiritual thing but which can only be communicated when articulated by the symbolic representation of its information content. Nevertheless this insight does not appear to have penetrated theology, where the absolute simplicity of god is considered to be fully consistent with omniscience. Aquinas agues that god is omniscient precisely because they are maximally spiritual, that is maximally simple. Aquinas, Summa: I, 14, 1: Is there knowledge in God?

Here we come to the role of evolution and creation, differentiating the strucureless initial singularity into the transfinitely strucured universe by, we will claim, the ceaseless emission of quanta of action by the creative divinity. This, we might understand, is the theological rendering of the big bang, starting gently and only reaching very high energies under the compressive force of gravitation. How do we fit this into the story? By the bifurcation of action into kinetic and potential energy.

We have to tell the whole story in the introducton, but if the thing is to have a compact expression, we need to constrain ourselves to 25 pages of 1000 words, and this includes the introduction:

1. Theology and imperialism.

2. Secrecy, mystery and spirituality.

[page 8]

3. The fecundity of the divinity - the doctrine of the Trinity

4. Evolution by variation and selection - symmertry,

5. From spirit to matter and information

6. Devolution and control - action energy, entropy. Action is conserved, it never dies [, the world is in perpetual motion].

Quantum theory and gravitation. In total 7 x 140 words = ~1000.

Put theology aside for three months and concentrate on romance for a change, honouring Feynman's datum that physics starts with sound ideas? The union of physics and theology inherited from Aristotle seems to be enormously fertile and simplifies my picture of the world to the point where I can understand and feel good about it.

A physical understanding is completely unmathematical, imprecise, an inexact thing but absolutely necessary to a physicist. Richard Feynman: Lectures on Physics II Chapter 2: Differential Calculus of Vector Fields

Our evolutionary history suggests that 'feeling' goes back to the beginning and lies at a much deeper layer in most systems than actual implementation. See eg Roberts, The Age 14/4/23. See also 4 above.

The function of a harmonic oscillator is to pass quanta of action from one state to another, the states being created and annihilated but the quanta of action, the underlying symmetry, are eternal, simple, indestructible and possess all the properties of the classical divinity. The divinity creates new quanta which are never

[page 9]

extinguished and contribute to the evolutionary complexity of the universe in a manner analogous to the emergence of the Trinity, although there is no limit to the number of persons or sources and their number is the measure of the entropy of the universe. According to the modern view, even black holes do not destroy entropy, but Hawking and Ellis's time reversed black hole creates entropy. Black hole thermodynamics - Wikipedia

Adams (1999), Marilyn McCord, Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God, Melbourne University Press 1999 Jacket: 'Thinkers in all societies have struggled to make sense of horrendous evil. This provocative book takes a religious perspective. It tackles a fundamental dilemma in Christian thought -- how to reconcile faith in God with the evils that afflict human beings. Distinguished American philosopher Marilyn McCord Adams argues that analytic philosophy of religion is too narrowly focussed. The ground rules for debate have allowed philosophers to avert their gaze from the very worst evils and from their impact on human lives. She proposes a radical shift away from the preoccupation with morals and towards more fruitful evaluative categories such as purity, defilement, honour, shame and aesthetics. The innovative approach of Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God will challenge thinkers both religious and secular.'

Anaplastic thyroid cancer - Wikipedia, Anaplastic thyroid cancer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, ' Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC), also known as anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, is an aggressive form of thyroid cancer characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells in the thyroid gland. This form of cancer generally carries a very poor prognosis due to its aggressive behavior and resistance to cancer treatments. The cells of anaplastic thyroid cancer are highly abnormal and usually no longer resemble the original thyroid cells and have poor differentiation. ATC is an uncommon form of thyroid cancer only accounting for 1-2% of cases, but due to its high mortality, is responsible for 20-50% of deaths from thyroid cancer. The median survival time after diagnosis is three to six months. Some studies report that 10% to 15% survive more than 1 year; 3-year and 5-year survival is very rare. It occurs more commonly in women than in men and is seen most commonly in people ages 40 to 70.' back

Aquinas, Summa: I, 14, 1, Is there knowledge in God?, ' I answer that, In God there exists the most perfect knowledge. . . . it is clear that the immateriality of a thing is the reason why it is cognitive; and according to the mode of immateriality is the mode of knowledge. Hence it is said in De Anima ii that plants do not know, because they are wholly material. But sense is cognitive because it can receive images free from matter, and the intellect is still further cognitive, because it is more separated from matter and unmixed, as said in De Anima iii. Since therefore God is in the highest degree of immateriality as stated above (Question 7, Article 1), it follows that He occupies the highest place in knowledge.' back

Feynman, Leighton and Sands FLP II_02, Chapter 2: Differential Calculus of Vector Fields, ' Ideas such as the field lines, capacitance, resistance, and inductance are, for such purposes, very useful. So we will spend much of our time analyzing them. In this way we will get a feel as to what should happen in different electromagnetic situations. On the other hand, none of the heuristic models, such as field lines, is really adequate and accurate for all situations. There is only one precise way of presenting the laws, and that is by means of differential equations. They have the advantage of being fundamental and, so far as we know, precise. If you have learned the differential equations you can always go back to them. There is nothing to unlearn.' back

Jeffrey Nicholls (2023), Cognitive Cosmology, ' My hope is to inspire our lives with a theology that identifies God and the Universe. If the Universe is divine, all our experiences are experiences of God. Theology can therefore become a discipline founded on evidence. Tim Markatos, Orthodoxy and Queerness: ‘Orthodox Tradition and Human Sexuality’, ' Last year was an eventful one for queer people in the Orthodox Church. After Russia invaded Ukraine last February, we were summarily drafted into Putin’s narrative of the invasion by Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. In a shocking sermon (ironically delivered on the Sunday of Forgiveness Vespers marking the start of Orthodox Great Lent), Kirill cited the prevalence of gay pride parades outside Russia as the defining symbol of the West’s slide into unrepentant sin. Western decadence and tolerance for homosexuality thus justified Putin’s violent incursion into Ukraine. Kirill’s reactionary remarks were followed a few months later by a more encouraging gesture from Orthodox officials. Wilkins, Fischer-Post & Herault, Unequal? Our analysis suggests Australia is a more equal society than has been thought, ' It has long been known that incomes in Australia are more evenly distributed than in the United States. But Australia has been thought to be a less equal society than many European ones, sitting somewhere in the middle between the United States and countries such as France. We can measure income equality using the so-called Gini coefficient, which gives a score of 0 to a country in which incomes are completely evenly distributed and a score of 1 to a country in which one person has all the income. The OECD gives the US a score of 0.375, Australia a score of 0.32 and France a score of 0.29. But we’ve done work using a broader measure of income that incorporates all taxes paid, all company profits and (importantly) in-kind benefits such as health and education. And we’ve found the positions of Australia and France are reversed.' back
