Previous work by Maxwell and Boltzmann was based on mechanical laws of motion and particle interaction in gases. In contrast, Boltzmann’s derivations here are much more general. They require only that particles can exchange kinetic energy, but they don’t specify the mechanism. As Boltzmann predicted in the final sentences of this paper his approach was applicable not just to gases, but to liquids and solids of any composition. Indeed, the Boltzmann distribution has also passed almost unchanged into the quantum world. Even without its connection to entropy, the Boltzmann distribution is of remarkably wide ranging importance: explaining, amongst other phenomena, the density distribution of the atmosphere, cooling by evaporation, and Arrhenius type chemical kinetics.
Kinetic energy has discrete values (“in nature all infinities are but limiting cases”) - consider kinetic energy rather than velocity.

page 1978: Boltzmann tabulates an example of 7 molecules with sharing a total of 7 units of energy with 8 possible values from 0 to 7 for each molecule, total energy 7. There are 15 possible distributions with the most probably being 0001123 with 420 out 1716 complexes, the most probably distribution.
The constraints on total molecules and total energy lead to a total number of permutations P = n! / w0w1w2 . . . will be maximized when the denominator is minimized and goes on to compute P for substances comprising a finite and infinite number of molecules.

The fundamental problem with AI is that it is built on human ‘written’ output, text, art, sound, etc and no so much on real reliable features of the universe where truth lies, and it has no other means of ascertaining truth except for a measure of consistency snd if its inputs contradict it must use some statistical technique to make it decisions. Unlike the 0, 1, 2, laws of thermodynamics, it has nothing like the conservation of energy as as foundation for consistent models. So What?

Penrose: Carlo Cercignani provides us, here, with a most fascinating and authoritative account of Boltzmann’s life and scientific influence, and of the effect that Boltzmann’s contemporaries had on him and he on them. A very valuable account of an important era in scientific history.

The world actually works after 14 billion years of variation and selection and our science, including theology, must lock onto this if we are to have peace and security. Campaigns of outright ego like that waged by Trump and his power hungry analogues can only lead to hell on earth.
Central to my story of creation is the distinction between the ergodic principle as it applies to formalism as understood by Hilbert constrained by consistency (Aquinas’s omnipotence) and conservation of energy, Boltzmann’s bound on particle statistics (1877).

My book, sent to Cardinal Victor Manuel, Dicastery of the Faith, Palazzo del Sant’ Officio returned unopened. Pity. First a critique of Maxwell showing that M distribution is not altered by collisions, since it describes an equilibrium state. However ‘it has not yet been proved that, whatever the initial state of the gas may be, it must always approach the limit observed by Maxwell.’
On the basis of ‘an exact treatment of the collision process’ he obtained an equation for the distribution function, f, ie the probability density of finding a molecule at x with velocity ε at some time t. Also uses x to represent kinetic energy as a variable.
Using the equation, B showed that Maxwell’s distribution is a steady solution to the equation and no other solution can be found. This was achieved by a function . . . that turns out to be

the opposite of entropy; the possibility of expressing the entropy in terms of a distribution function and showed not only the existence of an entropy function for equilibrium states but also to study its increase in irreversible processes.
