Having a bit of a 'dark night of the soul'. Perhaps not helped by reading Shirer, but I will say that my emotional state looks like the product of unconscious forces (since consciously I would always like to feel good and hopeful). Shirer. The amount of order than an agent can introduce in its lifetime is a function of the [net] rate of creation of order and the distribution of what is created. Hitler, by burning the human capital of Germany, was able to create order (the Nazi order) at a very great rate but the result was far from durable, in that it collapsed in a decade. Hitler was possessed of manic genius, and acted as a nucleation point for many individuals who saw his cause as right, even if they disliked the crude violence with which he followed it.

Here one is not trying to create a new order but to synthesis and propagate the elements of good order which already exist in the world and provide a framework for detecting and correcting the evils (breaches of good order) in the world. The structure of the world as we see it is a simple material order branching transfinitely into the completely spiritual order. Each level of order is softer and potentially more durable than the order beneath it (?). The mechanism we are looking to express is a cycle material - spiritual - material which was first modelled by the Hilbert Oscillator *(which unites and separates Hilbert spaces, thus changing the level of complexity).

[* (from page 87) As often before, a breakthrough like this leads to a desire to write a paper that is meaningful to the general scientific community. The time is getting closer but I still feel inhibited which says that either I am not inspired enough to overcome my reluctance to make the effort, [or] that there are more insights to come which might arise from my continued reading of Nielsen & Chuang. Nielsen & Chuang.]

What cheers me up most of all is a flood of insight and I become depressed when the insights are far between, even though I am aware that subconscious processing at a good rate is looking for the next vista. My original approach to the Hilbert oscillator came via a theory of knowledge (see essays on Money and Administration), but the quantum mechanical explanation of a complexity oscillator in terms of entanglement and disentanglement spotted above

[page 87]

spans the explanatory spectrum from matter to spirit allowing us to see them as one along the direction of view arising from invariance with respect to complexity.

A long time seems to have elapsed and I look at the clock and it has hardly moved. We consciously measure time by conscious moments. We experience no time when the moments (operations) are unconscious, much time when consciously plentiful.

One person = one entangled system.

The result of a little episode like this (a relatively frequent occurrence) is that the work once more seems worth whole going on with and therefore worthy of more capital investment.

Shirer 407: "Seyss-Inquart, the first of the quislings . . . " (What about Quisling?). Why do people act like this? Courage, independence, self-protection, etc etc. On the whole, the bulk of the population does not move far from the Zeitgeist (the middle classes, by definition, sit at the middle and like the black hole in a galaxy, help to structure the tails of the distribution to be consistent with themselves.)

Shirer 419: Schuschnigg "A decent upright man as a human being, he has become possessed, as had certain others in Europe, with a contempt for Western democracy and a passion for one-party authoritarian rule." The 'democratic oscillation' caused by the violent transient we call World War I and its subsequent peace.

Nationalism as a new religion.

[page 88]

Hitler's success largely due to bluff with a threat of force and a very shrewd estimation of the character of his opponents. A genius bully. Increasing the entropy and stability of the human race demands a common effort to spread power evenly, the worst case being a fascist dictator.

Most of the virtues relate to the ability to carry out a planned course of action that is designed (and believed) to lead to a favourable outcome. At the root of the tree of virtue is the virtue of leading a virtuous life and so reaping one's eternal reward. Somewhere in its midst is the virtue of being a virtuous farmer who acts so as to reap a bountiful crop with minimum cost. At the root of this concept of virtue is the faith that planned action has a better chance of leading to success than unplanned action.

Economist/Shell writing competition. An answer to a prayer - my principal misgiving with all this work is that it brings in no return while absorbing some of my energy which might be devoted to the support of my family, the maintenance of our joint property etc etc. To win this would indeed by a godsend, $20 000 worth!

"How much freedom should we trade for our security?"

Purpose of this essay is to examine the assumption implied in the wording of this topic, that we must trade freedom for security. To do this, we must first parametrize the notions freedom and security and show that security is in fact an increasing function of freedom. In order to do this we must first make a mathematical model of the human condition which enables us both to meaningfully identify variables

[page 89]

with the terms 'freedom' and 'security' and explore the mapping between them. In the long run, increased entropy (power, [freedom]) gives increased error correcting ability (security). How much freedom should we trade for our security?

A little bit of desperation and the feeling of being economically cornered (the price of poverty) must be necessary to rouse me from my winter torpor. It is probably true that my mood relates strongly to my financial position vis-a-vis the responsibilities I feel to the world locally and globally. One of my debts, to ASIC, will, when paid, bring my total investment in TTCo to $1000, an investment in a persona (mask, face, front) which must now be put to use raising funds to feed the embryonic physical religion and help it to find its place in the salvation of the world.

The sacrifice of freedom is the first step to insecurity, as is very clear to the wirewalker deprived of his/her pole.

Looking at Hitler's personality (and that of many other 'high achievers') we see a soul so driven by a vision that the body can sometimes barely sustain it. This pressure ended in H's case with suicide.

Shirer 639: "During the next 24 hours, from the evening of Sunday, August 20 [1939], when Hitler's appeal to Stalin went out over the wires to Moscow, until the following evening, the Fuehrer was in a state bordering on collapse . . . ." This pressure is both internal and external, in that H had painted himself into a corner by his decision to invade Poland on September 1, and he feared failure if he could not neutralize the Soviet Union with its 300 divisions.

Both spying and disclosure are error correcting mechanisms.

Hitler, from pure solipsism, was not prone to having his errors corrected.

[page 90]

Shirer 641: H: "There will probably never again in the future be a man with more authority than I have". Authority executive power? credibility? Credibility arises a) from submission to the truth; b) from modification of the world to bring it into line with one's utterances. In reality a superposition of the two.

Shirer 645: H: "In starting and waging was it is not the right that matters but the victory". This is an echo of the doctrine of trial by battle which assumes that divine providence grants victory to those whom God favours. This is in a sense true in physical theology too - he who wins wins because of a certain constellation of physical forces.

"Close your hearts to pity! Act brutally! Eighty million people must obtain what is their right. . . . The stronger man is right . . . Be harsh and remorseless. Be steeled against all signs of compassion . . . . Whoever has pondered over this world order knows that its meaning lies in the success of the best by means of force."

What we seek is a much more coherent, concise and developed version of the Banking Law Association essay and the Administration essay. Money, Value.

The Nazi bureaucracy was 20-40 times larger than its republican predecessor.

Conclusion of essay: The singular hope of the human race, and in fact of the planet is to move down the food chain (tree) to its root, solar energy,

FOOD TREE
SOUL TREE

Shirer 653: Irony? "Stalin: 'If England dominated the world that was due to the stupidity of the other countries that always allowed themselves to be bluffed" [a la Hitler]

[page 91]

Marx and the theory of history: Quantum mechanics and its extension to physical theology is our most effective theory of history.

Statespersonship, gossip and quantum mechanics all operate by the same paradigm.

Essay wishes to extract some benefits from the dot com and telco crashes by using the theory behind the technobubble to advance human understanding of human history and human nature.

Shell: a greatly simplified, compressed and updated version of an essay on the divinity of money. The executive summary. Money.

Shirer 675: "Hitler's hold on Germany - on the army, the police, the government, the people - was too complete to be loosened or undermined by anything they could think of doing." Which presumably extended to killing him.

On our definition of religion, Hitler's penetration of the minds of so many Germans so quickly points to the nucleation of a phase change in a supercooled/heated/stressed/. . . system. One can construct a phase diagram for a system , then by observing it, determine whether it is in a 'super' state, ie its various state parameters are in some was inconsistent, eg {temperature - 10, dew point 0, no condensation}

Given a 'super' state, a phase change is inevitable as soon as it is triggered, by the likes of Hitler or a drop of sulphuric acid.

Shirer 685: "The Duce is really out of his wits. His military instinct and his sense of war [elements of his personal religion] were leading him to war. Reason has now stopped him. [Physics] But this hurts him very much . . . Now he has had to confront the hard truth, and this for the Duce is a great blow."

Slogan: Respect physics or die.

From peace to war is a phase change? It is caused by a change in the payoffs between annihilation and cooperation. Axelrod.

Courage: the virtue that leads one to overcome the potential barrier between oneself and a favourable goal. Modelled on momentum, which in the physical world may carry a particle over hills to the [fertile] valleys beyond. Quantum tunnelling adds to the classical picture the existence of wormholes (tunnels) through which a particle may move even though it does not appear to have the momentum to go over the barrier.

FREEDOM = ENTROPY
SECURITY = FIDELITY
FIDELITY = F(ENTROPY)
SECURITY = F(FREEDOM)

The bureaucratic God relies on paperwork, like the recording angel with his golden and black ink so beloved of the nuns. The scientific God rejoices in moment to moment input.

Networks increase entropy by copying. What about quantum no cloning? We cannot make a perfect copy, because that would be the same thing. [copies are identical up to a point, eg spatially separated]

War is the failure of diplomacy. Diplomacy fails when persons cannot agree on issues that they see as critical to their survival (in some way). This failure to find a solution would suggest that their search space is too small.

[page 93]

Life need not be tough. Only in lean times. The prospect of earning US$20k in a few day's work points to the statistical structure of survivals. In this case, with say 10k entries, my expectation of the total prize = $65 000/10 000 = $6.50, about $1 per day (ignoring costs). If it gravitates to the top, however, earnings increase to about $5K per day, a very secure and liberating thought.

Networks are self-similar: a network can be a network of networks just as a set can be a set of sets. We understand quantum mechanics as a network whose nodes are states and whose edges are operators. (1D, 2D) How do we map union of networks onto unions of Hilbert spaces, to get the 'Cantor Transformation'?

E-Force (Macmillan)
C-Force (Cantor) -- entanglement. Khinchin, Cantor.

Hilbert space is a generalization of Euclidian space which preserves many of the properties of the latter like distances and angles. ([the independence of dimensions (orthogonality)]

ORTHOGONALITY: Here we find our definition of freedom. I am free to make as much noise as I like as long as I live in a soundproof room. The soundproofing cuts off my audio communication with my environment so that my activities do not upset my neighbours and lead to my prosecution under environmental legislation. ADIABATIC. Orthogonality decouples one degree of freedom from another, just as we can move E-W without moving N-S and up-down without affecting either, just as we can move through time without affecting our position (as I sit here).

Axelrod, Robert, The Evolution of Cooperation, Basic Books 1985 Amazon.com: 'This book is a must-read not only for students (broadly defined) of the social sciences, but also for politicians and bureaucrats, especially those in charge of military and foreign affairs. Axelrod's book is a tour-de-force in multi-method approaches. Although the author is a trifle repetitive and occasionally laborious, I think the profound content of the book far outweighs the minor inadequacies of its form. At the risk of sounding like a logical positivist, I would venture to say that Axelrod's approach offers hope for a bottom-up construction of cooperation in an uncertain world without a central authority.' Nielsen, Michael A, and Isaac L Chuang, Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Cambridge University Press 2000 Review: A rigorous, comprehensive text on quantum information is timely. The study of quantum information and computation represents a particularly direct route to understanding quantum mechanics. Unlike the traditional route to quantum mechanics via Schrödinger 's equation and the hydrogen atom, the study of quantum information requires no calculus, merely a knowledge of complex numbers and matrix multiplication. In addition, quantum information processing gives direct access to the traditionally advanced topics of measurement of quantum systems and decoherence.'
